In his first year with the Broncos last season, Darby finished the 2021 campaign on IR with a shoulder injury, after totaling 53 tackles and six pass defenses in 11 appearances. As Denver's defensive backfield continues to improve, the 28-year-old should provide the team with a strong veteran presence on a defense that projects to take another step forward in 2022.
Denver added Darby in free agency this offseason, along with fellow cornerback Kyle Fuller. The veteran will likely serve as an outside cornerback in Denver's defense. Darby provides a veteran presence for an improving defensive backfield.
Darby has started 56 of his 57 games through five pro seasons, but injuries cost him at least five appearances each of the past three years, and he also struggled with performance in 2019. He should be in the mix for a regular role in Washington, where Kendall Fuller and Fabian Moreau are the other cornerback options with significant experience as starters. Fuller is the best bet for IDP value, as he's capable of playing any position in the secondary. Darby has mostly just played as an outside corner, which doesn't create as many opportunities for tackles or blitzes.
Darby has missed vast stretches of games during his two-year run as an Eagle, with a torn ACL keeping him off the field after Week 10 of last season. Considering this particular injury occurred Nov. 11, there's a very real chance that he'll miss a handful of games once the campaign kicks off. When he receives clearance to return, Darby will be working under a one-year, prove-it deal, so the 25-year-old has the opportunity to revitalize a topsy-turvy career to date.
Darby missed half of 2017 due to a dislocated right ankle suffered in the first game of the season. In eight games, he produced at roughly the same clip he had during his first two pro campaigns, tallying 34 tackles, nine deflections and three interceptions, the latter number being good for a tie for second on the team and a career high despite the missed time. Now he returns as a starting cornerback and enters a contract year looking to build on those numbers. If healthy, he could be one of the better playmakers at the position in 2018.
Following Stephon Gilmore's departure to New England via free agency, Darby -- in his third NFL campaign -- now profiles at the Bills' top cornerback. He's coming off a 2016 season in which he recorded 69 tackles in 14 games. If he can snag some picks (which he did not last season), the 5-11, 193-pounder could merit IDP consideration in 2017.
Entering his second season, Darby should benefit from a full year in the Bills' system and a normal offseason as a professional. Already regarded as one of the top young corners in the league after registering 68 tackles, 21 pass defenses and two inteceptions last year, Darby has a high ceiling and room to grow into a true difference maker.
Darby was the Bills' 2nd round pick in 2015 and should step right in to bolster the talented Buffalo defense, most likely in the nickel or dime formation. He lacks elite size, but he has shown exceptional athleticism at Florida State as well as in an outstanding amateur track career.
