This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.
Sunday Update Complete (11:10 ET) - please watch our latest news page for any late-breaking news.
Here are our rankings for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Flex Rankings are for PPR leagues.
Typically, this article will be posted on Tuesday evenings, roughly around 10:00 pm PT - it used to be 8:00, but life intervenes, and I coach two soccer practices on Tuesdays now. However, for Week 1 they are up extra early, even with one more preseason game to go. ***These are not draft rankings. They are solely for the given week of the season.***
I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it.
The first week is always the trickiest. I try not to rely too much on matchups early on - personnel changes, both on the field and in the coaching staffs, dictate so much change, as does a critical injury. By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?".

Quarterback
1. | Aaron Rodgers GB at Chi |
2. | Matt Ryan ATL vs. Phi |
3. | Tony Romo DAL vs. NYG Note: Sat out practice Wednesday night, but was back out there Thursday. Much like last season. |
4. | Tom Brady NE vs. Pit Note: At the risk of overvaluing the preseason, Pittsburgh's defense looks terrible again. I expect Brady and Gronk to have a field day Thursday night. Tiny downgrade due to the weather. |
5. | Ben Roethlisberger PIT at NE |
6. | Peyton Manning DEN vs. Bal |
7. | Andrew Luck IND at Buf Note: Downgrading ever so slightly because of the matchup - I have visions of Rodgers' visit to Buffalo in December last season in my head. |
8. | Sam Bradford PHI at Atl |
9. | Eli Manning NYG at Dal |
10. | Drew Brees NO at Ari |
11. | Ryan Tannehill MIA at Was |
12. | Russell Wilson SEA at StL |
13. | Jay Cutler CHI vs. GB |
14. | Carson Palmer ARZ vs. NO |
15. | Philip Rivers SD vs. Det |
16. | *Andy Dalton CIN at Oak Note: Potentially dangerous trap game. Look for Khalil Mack to wreak havoc with the Bengals' offensive line. (Neck) Not on the Week 1 injury report. |
17. | Cam Newton CAR at Jax |
18. | Teddy Bridgewater MIN at SF |
19. | Joe Flacco BAL at Den |
20. | *Tyrod Taylor BUF vs. Ind Note: Bills re-signed Matt Cassel and will make him the backup over E.J. Manuel. |
21. | Matthew Stafford DET at SD |
22. | Alex Smith KC at Hou |
23. | Colin Kaepernick SF vs. Min |
24. | Marcus Mariota TEN at TB |
25. | Brian Hoyer HOU vs. KC |
26. | *Jameis Winston TB vs. Ten Note: Sprained an ankle during the second preseason week, but not on this week's injury list. |
27. | Ryan Fitzpatrick NYJ vs. Cle |
28. | Nick Foles STL vs. Sea |
29. | Blake Bortles JAC vs. Car |
30. | Kirk Cousins WAS vs. Mia Note: He'll probably get sacked less frequently than RG3 would have, but this could get ugly. Colt McCoy and not RG3 will be the backup this week. |
31. | Derek Carr OAK vs. Cin |
32. | Josh McCown CLE at NYJ Note: Johnny Manziel (elbow) might still be the backup behind McCown, but it could be Austin Davis instead. |
Running Backs
1. | Eddie Lacy GB at Chi Note: Love the matchup in Week 1 - I expect the Packers to lean heavily on Lacy given their injuries at WR. |
2. | Adrian Peterson MIN at SF |
3. | Marshawn Lynch SEA at StL |
4. | DeMarco Murray PHI at Atl |
5. | Jeremy Hill CIN at Oak |
6. | Justin Forsett BAL at Den |
7. | Jamaal Charles KC at Hou |
8. | C.J. Anderson DEN vs. Bal |
9. | Lamar Miller MIA at Was |
10. | Doug Martin TB vs. Ten |
11. | Mark Ingram NO at Ari |
12. | Matt Forte CHI vs. GB |
13. | *LeSean McCoy BUF vs. Ind Note: Buried for now because of the hamstring injury. Full practice Thursday, probably won't be 100 percent, but should play. ***Now expected to have the bulk of the carries, if not quite a full load.*** |
14. | Latavius Murray OAK vs. Cin |
15. | *Alfred Morris WAS vs. Mia Note: ***Appears to be in some sort of time-share with Matt Jones: '...Alfred's still the bell cow. We want to keep him fresh for 16 games. If he gets 12 to 20 carries, Matt Jones gets eight to 10, I don't know how that's going to work or play out....'*** |
16. | Jonathan Stewart CAR at Jax |
17. | *Tevin Coleman ATL vs. Phi Note: Officially the starter for this week. |
18. | Carlos Hyde SF vs. Min |
19. | Andre Ellington ARZ vs. NO |
20. | Chris Ivory NYJ vs. Cle |
21. | *Frank Gore IND at Buf Note: Colts coach Chuck Pagano is already talking about monitoring Gore's workload. |
22. | *Bishop Sankey TEN at TB Note: My candidate to outperform expectations. Cobb is out, and the running QB should open up some rushing lanes for him. |
23. | Melvin Gordon SD vs. Det |
24. | Rashad Jennings NYG at Dal |
25. | *DeAngelo Williams PIT at NE Note: Starting in Week 1 with Le'Veon Bell suspended. |
26. | *Joseph Randle DAL vs. NYG Note: Conflicting reports on who will start between Randle and McFadden. Reports surfacing Wednesday suggested McFadden, but Randle ran with the first-team offense Thursday. ***The latest from Adam Schefter is that Randle should start and be the lead back, but his report is anonymously sourced.*** |
27. | T.J. Yeldon JAC vs. Car |
28. | *Ameer Abdullah DET at SD Note: Going to be used as the team's kick and punt returner - that might actually mean fewer plays from scrimmage early on for Abdullah. ***Bell will start, but Abdullah is expected to play a big role in the offense too, for whatever that's worth. Very hard to gauge what that translates to.*** |
29. | *Joique Bell DET at SD Note: (Knee/Achilles) Full participant in practice this week. |
30. | *Benny Cunningham STL vs. Sea Note: Might start with Mason banged up. |
31. | *Isaiah Crowell CLE at NYJ Note: Leading candidate to start, with Duke Johnson recovering from a concussion and Terrance West now gone. Further complicating matters is the suspension of the OL coach. |
32. | Alfred Blue HOU vs. KC |
33. | Giovani Bernard CIN at Oak |
34. | *Brandon Bolden NE vs. Pit Note: Wild guess that he gets more carries in Week 1 with Blount suspended, but as always with the Pats, estimating who gets the work in any given week is difficult at best. |
35. | *Darren McFadden DAL vs. NYG Note: Conflicting reports on who will start between Randle and McFadden. Reports surfacing Wednesday suggested McFadden, but Randle ran with the first-team offense Thursday. |
36. | Ronnie Hillman DEN vs. Bal |

45. | Knile Davis KC at Hou |
46. | Denard Robinson JAC vs. Car |
47. | *Devonta Freeman ATL vs. Phi Note: Could leapfrog Coleman as soon as he demonstrates his hamstring has healed. Still limited in Thursday's practice. Coleman named the starter for this week. ***Full practice Friday and Saturday, listed as probable.*** |
48. | Javorius Allen BAL at Den |
49. | *Matt Jones WAS vs. Mia Note: ***Could get 8-to-10 carries, depending on game-flow.*** |
50. | Andre Williams NYG at Dal |
51. | *Damien Williams MIA at Was Note: Likely the top backup behind Lamar Miller with Jay Ajayi placed on the IR-to-return list. |
52. | Cameron Artis-Payne CAR at Jax |
53. | *Christine Michael DAL vs. NYG Note: Traded to the Cowboys for a conditional 7th round pick. While there's a potential huge upside, I have tempered expectations for Week 1 - he's currently listed as third on the depth chart, plus he's got to learn a new offense, and focus/work-ethic has been an issue for him in the past. |
54. | *Roy Helu OAK vs. Cin Note: Officially listed as third on the depth chart, behind Murray and Taiwan Jones. |
55. | Jeremy Langford CHI vs. GB |
56. | Fred Jackson SEA at StL |
57. | *Josh Robinson IND at Buf Note: Leading candidate to be Frank Gore's backup now that Boom Herron is on the IR list. (Concussion) Not on the Week 1 injury list. |
58. | Darren Sproles PHI at Atl |
59. | *Terrance West TEN at TB Note: Traded to the Titans for a conditional 7th round pick. Could be the backup with Cobb out. |

62. | Theo Riddick DET at SD |
63. | Lance Dunbar DAL vs. NYG |
64. | Zach Zenner DET at SD |

66. | Karlos Williams BUF vs. Ind |
67. | James White NE vs. Pit |
68. | Dexter McCluster TEN at TB |
69. | Zac Stacy NYJ vs. Cle |
70. | Chris Johnson ARZ vs. NO |
71. | Chase Reynolds STL vs. Sea |
72. | Stevan Ridley NYJ vs. Cle |
73. | Chris Polk HOU vs. KC |
74. | Bobby Rainey TB vs. Ten |
75. | Juwan Thompson DEN vs. Bal |
76. | *Travaris Cadet NE vs. Pit Note: (Hamstring) Full practice Monday, but competing with Dion Lewis and James White for third-down reps (though that could possibly be more if the Pats come out throwing a lot against Pittsburgh). Full practice this week, but listed as questionable for Thursday. |
77. | *Antonio Andrews TEN at TB Note: (Hamstring) Limited Thursday. |
78. | Bryce Brown BUF vs. Ind |
79. | Terron Ward ATL vs. Phi |
80. | *Tre Mason STL vs. Sea Note: (Hamstring) Officially listed as questionable, but the reports over the weekend from Coach Jeff Fisher sounded optimistic. Didn't practice Wednesday, looking less optimistic. ***Didn't practice all week, will try to work out before Sunday's game but it doesn't look optimistic.*** |
81. | *Lorenzo Taliaferro BAL at Den Note: (Knee) Did not practice Thursday. |
82. | *C.J. Spiller NO at Ari Note: (Knee) Might not be ready for Week 1. Didn't practice Wednesday, not expected to play this week. |
83. | *LeGarrette Blount NE vs. Pit Note: Suspended for Week 1. |
84. | *Le'Veon Bell PIT at NE Note: Suspended for the first two games, down from three games. |
85. | *Todd Gurley STL vs. Sea Note: The Rams don't have a specific target date for Gurley (knee) to start playing in games, though they're hopeful it's before their Week 6 bye. Rams now pointing to Week 4. |
86. | *Arian Foster HOU vs. KC Note: Foster (groin) is 'ahead of schedule,' though the Texans aren't really putting a timetable on his return. The general consensus from those covering the team is late-September, early-October. |

8. | Brandin Cooks NO at Ari |
9. | DeAndre Hopkins HOU vs. KC |
10. | *Emmanuel Sanders DEN vs. Bal Note: Dealt with a hamstring injury in the preseason, but should be good to go for Week 1. So much so, that the Broncos plan on using him as a punt return guy. |
11. | Jordan Matthews PHI at Atl |
12. | *Randall Cobb GB at Chi Note: Was still bothered by his shoulder last week. Wednesday will be an illuminating day. Range of motion limited in practice this week, but Cobb vowed that he would play Sunday. ***Listed as probable despite limited practices this week.*** |

14. | Davante Adams GB at Chi |
15. | *Julian Edelman NE vs. Pit Note: Limited most of the preseason by a lower leg issue, but expected to be ready for Thursday. |

24. | Andre Johnson IND at Buf |
25. | Brandon Marshall NYJ vs. Cle |
26. | *Alshon Jeffery CHI vs. GB Note: (Calf) Not present at the media portion of Monday's practice. I'm starting to get nervous, but won't move into panic mode until Thursday or Friday, if he's still sitting out then. 45. | Kenny Stills MIA at Was |
46. | Steve Johnson SD vs. Det |
47. | *Eddie Royal CHI vs. GB Note: Starting with Kevin White out, and might be the primary target with Alshon Jeffery nursing a calf injury. (Hip) Also limited - in fact, all three Bears wideouts were limited Thursday. ***Listed as questionable but expected to play.*** |
48. | *Philly Brown CAR at Jax Note: Named one of the two starting wideouts for Week 1, along with Ted Ginn. |
49. | Larry Fitzgerald ARZ vs. NO |

51. | *Allen Hurns JAC vs. Car Note: (Hip) Not listed on the Week 1 injury report. |

53. | *DeVante Parker MIA at Was Note: (Foot) Played in the preseason finale, and his foot responded well. I wouldn't start him this first week, but he's a guy you want to stash. Good week of practice. ***Listed as probable.*** |

Making matters worse, Evans has a late-game, giving you fewer pivot options.*** |
56. | *Phillip Dorsett IND at Buf Note: Beat out Donte Moncrief for the third receiver's slot on the Colts. We'll see how meaningful that distinction is by the number of targets he gets. |

63. | Leonard Hankerson ATL vs. Phi |
64. | Donte Moncrief IND at Buf Note: Formerly trendy wideout is now the Colts' fourth receiver. If you have him, don't let him go just yet - there's too much talent and he's on too good of a team to surrender just yet. |
65. | *Aaron Dobson NE vs. Pit Note: Dobson's previous owners may swear off him forever, but suddenly he's the Pats' No. 3 receiver to start the season. |

70. | *Tevin Coleman ATL vs. Phi Note: Officially the starter for this week. |
71. Very hard to gauge what that translates to.*** |
72. | T.J. Yeldon JAC vs. Car |
73. | Giovani Bernard CIN at Oak |
74. | Marques Colston NO at Ari |
75. | Shane Vereen NYG at Dal |
76. | Anquan Boldin SF vs. Min |
78. | Rashad Jennings NYG at Dal |
80. | Ronnie Hillman DEN vs. Bal |
81. | *LeSean McCoy BUF vs. Ind Note: Buried for now because of the hamstring injury. Full practice Thursday, probably won't be 100 percent, but should play. ***Now expected to have the bulk of the carries, if not quite a full load.*** |
82. | Charles Sims TB vs. Ten |
83. | Danny Woodhead SD vs. Det |
84. | *Joique Bell DET at SD Note: (Knee/Achilles) Full participant in practice this week. |
85. | *Brandon Bolden NE vs. Pit Note: Wild guess that he gets more carries in Week 1 with Blount suspended, but as always with the Pats, estimating who gets the work in any given week is difficult at best. |

101. | Ryan Mathews PHI at Atl |
102. | James Starks GB at Chi |

104. | Knile Davis KC at Hou |
105. | Denard Robinson JAC vs. Car |
106. | Dion Lewis NE vs. Pit |
108. | *Darren McFadden DAL vs. NYG Note: Conflicting reports on who will start between Randle and McFadden. Reports surfacing Wednesday suggested McFadden, but Randle ran with the first-team offense Thursday. |
