Hicketts inked a two-year contract with the Red Wings on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Hicketts was a restricted free agent this offseason, and was able to land back with Detroit. He wasn't impressive in limited action with Detroit last season, going scoreless while posting a minus-9 rating in 11 games, but he showed some potential while skating in the minors, notching three goals and 27 points in 64 appearances. The 23-year-old blueliner will try to secure a spot on the Red Wings' Opening Night roster during training camp in September.

Hicketts made his NHL debut last season, captivating Red Wings fans with his intrepid playing style from the blue line. The prospect from Kamloops, British Columbia recorded three assists, nine hits and 12 blocked shots to complement a plus-5 rating through five games. His AHL numbers with Grand Rapids -- including 10 goals and 36 assists over 140 games between 2016-18 -- suggest that he has the offensive chops necessary to become relevant in the fantasy arena before long, but unfortunately for Hicketts, he could struggle for consistency as the Wings blueliners as a whole only factored into about 28 percent of scoring plays to comprise the league's 28th-ranked offense in 2017-18. A relative unknown, he should go for pennies on the dollar in fantasy drafts with the potential to yield huge returns, though it'll be important to chart his progress to be sure that he'll crack the Opening Night roster.
Detroit lacked offensive weapons on the blue line last season. Veteran Mike Green led the way with 35 points, but add up and average the totals of the remaining eight defensemen and you barely get 13 points apiece. Hicketts is a gifted playmaker who figures to breathe life into the Wings’ offense from the back end someday. The only question -- and it’s a biggie -- is when will he arrive on the big stage? Hicketts has played for the Victoria Royals of the WHL the past four seasons, serving as captain. Most recently, he impressed scouts with back-to-back campaigns of 50-plus assists. Hicketts would go on to earn WHL Western Conference First All-Star honors and a gold medal at the 2016 World Junior Championship as a representative for Team Canada. He’ll almost assuredly require development time in the minors, yet it’s tough to ignore his rapid ascension to date. Despite not getting drafted, Hicketts participated in the Red Wings development camp in 2014, and eventually, the annual prospects tournament. Look for Hicketts to compete for a roster spot in training camp and keep him in mind for dynasty leagues.
