Breaks out in Win Over Cardinal
Undisclosed
November 30, 2021
Coan completed 26-of-35 pass attempts for 345 yards and two touchdowns in the Notre Dame's 45-14 win over Stanford last Saturday on the road.
ANALYSIS
It was senior's second biggest passing game of the year, only 366 yards and four touchdowns in the season opener at Florida State was bigger. The Irish went against the Stanford defensive statistics that showed the Cardinal were tougher against the pass than the run. They were pretty much pass heavy from the start of the game. Coan finished his senior regular season with 2,641 passing yards and 20 touchdowns in the air as well as two rushing touchdowns.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2020
Coan's first significant action under center came and went in 2018 without much to take away from it. He started the season as the understudy to Alex Hornibrook, but a head injury sidelined Hornibrook for a number of games and moved Coan into the spotlight. He finished the season having completed 56 of his 93 pass attempts (60.2 completion percentage) for 515 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Hornibrook transferred to Florida State this offseason, leaving Coan to compete with highly touted freshman signal-caller Graham Mertz. The two figure to duke it out in camp before a call on the starter is made. Even if Coan snags the gig, his performance last season doesn't lend itself to promising fantasy prospects in 2019.
While Coan’s 2019 pick didn’t sport the pizzazz that makes him valuable in the fantasy realm, he was a consistent presence under center en route to an 18:5 TD:INT ratio over his 14 games quarterbacking the offense. Coan’s 69.6 completion percentage ranked seventh in tin the country and his 151.76 quarterback rating slotted him 19th nationally. While that all looks great, Coan tossed more than two touchdown passes in a game just once all season (Week 2 versus Central Michigan) and could still face some competition for the starting job in camp in the form of Graham Mertz. It’s worth noting that Coan also really struggled in most games of note, sporting sub-7.0 yards per attempt in four of his six games versus ranked teams. Even with Jonathan Taylor gone, it’s tough to see Coan as anything more than a game-manager.
