Golden State Warriors
2020 Fantasy Outlook
Wanamaker found himself in a legitimate backup role last season with the Celtics, seeing 19.3 minutes per game and averaging 6.9 points, 2.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds while shooting a league-high 92.6 percent from the charity stripe. His 44.8 percent from the field and 36.3 percent shooting from three were respectable as well. Heading into 2020-21, Wanamaker will be on a new team, as the 31-year-old signed a one-year, $2.3 million contract with the Warriors. With Golden State, he figures to occupy a backup role to Steph Curry, though he'll also have to compete with Jordan Poole, Damion Lee and others for playing time. Wanamaker will probably have much more real-life impact than fantasy impact, and he can be ignored in the vast majority of fantasy leagues. Read Past Outlooks

College/International Summary

Before signing his first NBA contract with the Celtics, Brad Wanamaker played four years at the University of Pittsburgh and then seven seasons overseas. During his last two seasons at Pitt, Wanamaker started 68 straight games, averaging 12.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.3 steals per contest. After his senior season, the point guard was named an AP All-America Honorable Mention selection. Wanamaker's first professional season (2011-12) was split between Austin's D-League squad and Italy's Teramo team. Wanamaker spent all of the 2012-13 season with the French Pro A Limoges squad, but he would blossom one year later with the Italian Pistoia squad, averaging 16.2 points, 4.7 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. That success led to two seasons with Germany's Brose Bramberg squad, where he'd have fellow future Celtic Daniel Theis as a teammate. Wanamaker would then play two seasons in Turkey with Darussafaka and Fenerbahce, respectively, before signing with the Celtics ahead of the 2018-19 season.

2019

Wanamaker saw his role expand significantly in his second NBA season. The 30-year-old appeared in 71 of the Celtics' 72 games, drawing one start and seeing his average minutes rise from 9.5 as a rookie to 19.3 in 2019-20. Along the way, Wanamaker posted 6.9 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 0.9 steals per game -- all career bests. Most remarkably, though, he led the entire NBA in free-throw percentage with a .926 mark, missing just 10 attempts from the charity stripe all season. Wanamaker chipped in double-digit points off the bench on 18 occasions. On Dec. 22 in a home win over the Hornets, Wanamaker dished a career-best eight assists. Arguably his finest effort came Feb. 3, when he delivered a season-high 16 points along with five assists, three rebounds and a career-high four steals against Atlanta. After the coronavirus pandemic put the season on pause, Wanamaker was even more effective, shooting 59.1 percent from the field en route to 9.3 points per game in seeding play. He remained a regular member of the Celtics' rotation throughout their run to the Eastern Conference Finals, averaging 4.9 points with 2.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 0.7 steals per game. In Game 5 of Boston's second-round series against Toronto, Wanamaker posted a career-playoff-high 15 points, three rebounds, two assists and steal in the win.

2018

After seven years of proving himself overseas, Wanamaker finally became an NBA rookie during his age-29 season in 2018-19. Wanamaker's body of work in France, Italy, Germany and Turkey convinced the Celtics to sign him to a one-year contract in the summer of 2018. The University of Pittsburgh product ultimately saw action in 36 games with Boston as well as two matches with the G League's Maine Red Claws. With the Celtics, the point guard averaged 3.9 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists over 9.5 minutes per game. On Jan. 14, with Kyrie Irving out, Wanamaker played 26 minutes, producing 13 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals against the Nets. Nine days later, Wanamaker delivered 11 points in a home win over the Cavaliers. Then, during the last game of the season, Wanamaker scored a career-high 17 points to go with seven dimes and six boards in a win over the Wizards. Wanamaker went on to appear in four of the Celtics' nine playoff games. In Game 2 of the second round against Milwaukee, he scored seven points with a steal and an assist in just 7:04 off the bench.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2018
Wanamaker, a 30-year-old NBA sophomore, returns to Boston with minimal expectations. The veteran will probably champion the end of the bench for the Celtics. Wanamaker is behind star Kemba Walker, veteran Marcus Smart and rookie Carsen Edwards on the Celtics' point guard depth chart. Despite the loss of Kyrie Irving and Terry Rozier, Wanamaker will be fortunate to exceed the 36 games played that he logged last season. Should two-way rookie Tremont Waters shine with the Maine Red Claws, there is a chance Wanamaker could lose his roster spot.
After one year in the D-League followed by six seasons in Europe, Wanamaker left roughly $3.8 million on the table to return stateside and sign a rookie minimum deal with the Celtics. The 29-year-old combo guard, who played collegiately at Pittsburgh, will face an uphill battle for meaningful minutes, considering he’s behind Kyrie Irving, Terry Rozier, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart on the depth chart. Of course, the same was said about Shane Larkin this time last year, and Larkin wound up appearing in 54 games and averaging 14 minutes per contest. due in large part to injuries elsewhere on the roster. At 6-4, Wanamaker, a former teammate of Daniel Theis in Germany, has the defensive versatility that Boston covets.
