Jose Abreu: (Ankle) Placed on 15-Day DL

Posted on May 18, 2014 at 8:02 AM

Abreu was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with tendinitis in his left ankle, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The slugging first baseman had been nursing some left ankle soreness for the last couple of days and was set to sit out Sunday, but there was no sort of suggestion that a DL stint was in the works. The White Sox are officially characterizing the injury as posterior tibia tendinitis, with a timetable for his return not yet announced. No matter how much time Abreu ends up missing, it's a crippling blow for the White Sox and fantasy owners, as Abreu tops all of baseball with 15 homers on the season. Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn are slated to fill in at first base in Abreu's stead.
