NASCAR Return at Indianapolis
XFINITY Series
March 4, 2020
Stewart announced Wednesday that he will compete in the July 4 Xfinity Series race at famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which will be contested for the first time on the track's 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course, motorsport.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Stewart hasn't raced in NASCAR since his 2016 retirement, and he hasn't raced in the Xfinity Series since way back in 2013. The racing legend will dust off the helmet and fire suit and strap in for July's first-ever Xfinity Series race on the Indianapolis road course. "Everyone knows what Indy means to me, so I can't think of a better place to race on Fourth of July weekend," said Stewart. "It's going to be cool making history by turning left and right in a stock car at the Brickyard, and the racing will be full of action and contact." No details are available yet on car owner, team or car number for the event.

2006
Retired from NASCAR at the conclusion of the 2016 season as a three-time champion.
The three-time Sprint Cup Series champion was unsuccessful in defending his 2011 title. In fact, it was a very up-and-down season for Smoke in 2012. His three victories were offset by shockingly poor finishes at some of his best tracks. It all added up to a 16 Top-10 finish campaign, which ranks among the worst of his career. The good news is that all that stands between Stewart and getting back to the top is finding some consistency. We’re not sure the No. 14 team has a handle on that quite yet. The last 10 races of last season showed as inconsistent a driver as Stewart had been all season long. His four Top 10’s during the Chase were offset by five finishes outside the Top 15. Stewart has the potential to climb the rankings, but he needs to rediscover that consistency first.
The reigning Nextel Cup champion will make another strong bid for the cup in 2006. Stewart's strengths are multi-fold and the #20 team has top notch equipment, so another championship could be in store this season.
