Tanaka announced Thursday via his personal Twitter account that he agreed to a contract with the Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. According to the Kyodo News, Tanaka's contract is a two-year, $17.2 million deal that includes additional incentives.
ANALYSIS
Following a productive seven-year stint in Major League Baseball with the New York Yankees, the 32-year-old right-hander will return to the NPB team with which he began his professional career in 2007. Before bolting for North America, Tanaka was arguably the top pitcher in NPB, earning All-Star nods in six of seven seasons, two Sawamura Awards and one Pacific League MVP award. While he wasn't nearly as successful with the Yankees, he still proved to be a high-quality No. 2 or mid-rotation pitcher, making two All-Star appearances while going 78-46 with a 3.74 ERA over 174 outings. In his return to the Golden Eagles, the 32-year-old should quickly reclaim his status as the staff ace and as one of the NPB's elite starters.
