Herrig underwent a second knee surgery in October of 2020 and hasn't fought since August of 2020, when she lost to Virna Jandiroba via submission (armbar) at UFC 253. However, she'll return to the Octagon against Kowalkiewicz, who has lost five consecutive fights. Kowalkiewicz most recently lost to Jessica Penne via submission (armbar) at UFC 265 in August. Herrig has slight advantages in height and reach.

She was coming off a torn ACL and was going up against a legitimate contender. On top of that, she was having all sorts of issues with her usually training situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
