Jared Cannonier

Set to return in October
August 1, 2020
UFC president Dana White announced Friday that Cannonier (pectoral) will face Robert Whittaker in a middleweight fight at UFC 254 on Oct. 24 Brett Okamoto of ESPN reports.
Cannonier was originally slated to face off against Whittaker at UFC 248 back in March, but the fight was called off after Whittaker withdrew. Shortly after the fight's cancellation, Cannonier underwent pectoral surgery, which extended his fighting hiatus even further. The 36-year-old hasn't fought since September 2019, but he's riding a streak of three straight knockout victories. If he can pull out another victory over Whittaker, he should be next up to face Israel Adesanya for the middleweight championship belt.

Cannonier said Monday that he feels about 60-to-65 percent recovered from the pectoral surgery he required in February, Alexander K. Lee of MMAFighting.com reports.
Cannonier expects to resume full-on training in June before targeting a return to the Octagon in the fall, which will come nearly a full year after his last fight. The 36-year-old is riding a three-fight winning streak on the line and owns a 13-4-0 record for his MMA career.

On standby for UFC 248
February 9, 2020
Cannonier will serve as the backup for the main fight at UFC 248 on March 8 in Las Vegas, MMAJunkie.com reports.
Cannonier was initially scheduled to face Robert Whittaker (personal) at UFC 248, but his opponent withdrew for undisclosed personal reasons and a replacement hasn't yet been announced. While he still remains off the card, Cannonier is now scheduled to serve as a backup option for the main event, in the event that either Israel Adesanya or Yoel Romero are forced to withdraw for any reason. Coming off a three-fight winning streak, Cannonier will now prepare for the eventuality of a match during UFC 248.
Needs new opponent
January 15, 2020
Cannonier needs a new opponent for UFC 248 after Robert Whittaker (personal) withdrew from the fight Wednesday, Ariel Helwani of ESPN reports.
Whittaker was forced to withdraw from the matchup for undisclosed personal reasons, but the promotion is searching for a replacement opponent on short notice. Given the timeline ahead of the fight, it wouldn't be surprising if the UFC was able to find a replacement. Cannonier currently carries a three-fight winning streak.
Draws Whittaker in Vegas
December 20, 2019
Cannonier will take on Robert Whittaker in a middleweight matchup at UFC 248 on March 8 in Las Vegas.
Cannonier has emerged victorious in his last three trips to the Octagon, finishing each of those opponents via KO/TKO within two rounds. While the UFC won't give him a title shot just yet, he'll take on a former champion in Whittaker in what would theoretically be his last step before a chance at the belt. Cannonier will concede a bit of height to Whittaker, but owns a significant four-inch reach advantage. Whittaker tends to throw and land more volume in the striking department, while Cannonier's striking accuracy and defense are statistically superior. Neither has much of an offensive wrestling game to speak of, so look for this to be a stand-up affair.
