First of five DWCS contracts
September 8, 2021
Anheliger defeated Muin Gafurov via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of five fighters to be awarded an official UFC contract.
Anheliger started his professional career with five losses in his first seven fights, but shifted camps to Champion's Creed Martial Arts, and that's what he credits for allowing him to right the ship. He took an eight-fight winning streak into Tuesday's bout, where the bantamweight entered as a sizable underdog of approximately (+315). While he earned the big upset and contract, it wasn't smooth sailing throughout. Anheliger found himself in challenging grappling situations early, allowing Gafurov to spend much of the first round either on his back or in full mount. Anheliger did make it back to his feet in Round 1 and land a huge knee that sent Gafurov to the canvas. He followed up with ground-and-pound and defended several armbar attempts in top position. Gafurov added to his control time advantage and likely took Round 2, but he was too exhausted to continue this wrestling pace in the third round. Anheliger took advantage and used his tremendous cardio to push the pace, landing big shots to the head and body that had power behind them. He even recorded a takedown of his own to put the icing on the cake. Anheliger is past "prospect" status at the age of 34, but he'll add depth to a stacked bantamweight division.
