Possible medical suspension
HeavyweightUFC
April 29, 2021
Espino has been suspended 180 days by the Nevada Athletic Commission pending medical clearance of a right elbow injury, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Espino caught a tough break at UFC on ESPN 22 on April 17, when he lost a fight he was seemingly winning after an illegal groin strike in Round 3. To add insult to injury, he'll likely be sidelined until the fall unless cleared earlier by a physician.

Falls via technical split decision
HeavyweightUFC
April 17, 2021
Espino lost to Alexandr Romanov via technical split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
That's correct, "technical split decision." Espino is going to be furious with the result and rightfully so. After the two men appeared to split the first two rounds, Espino hit Romanov with an accidental groin strike a minute into Round 3. It didn't appear major, but Romanov said he couldn't continue. The judges then scored the first minute of the round, which appeared to certainly go in Espino's favor. Somehow, Romanov was awarded the decision. It's a baffling result, although Espino's foul, while not intentional, did lead to the stoppage. This was extremely competitive for as long as it lasted. Perhaps the UFC will run it back.
Will fight Romanov
HeavyweightUFC
April 2, 2021
Espino is set to square off against Alexandr Romanov at UFC Vegas 24 on April 17, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
ANALYSIS
Espino is coming off a victory over Jeff Hughes via submission in Round 1 of UFC 253. Meanwhile, his opponent, Romanov, most recently defeated Marcos Rogerio de Lima via technical submission in Round 1 of UFC on ESPN+ 40. Espino will look to improve on his 11-1 UFC record when the two step into the octagon together.
Easily submits Jeff Hughes
HeavyweightUFC
September 26, 2020
Espino defeated Jeff Hughes via submission (arm-triangle) at 3:48 of Round 1 at UFC 253 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
ANALYSIS
Espino turns 40 years of age in just a couple weeks and hadn't fought in nearly two years, but that didn't stop him from blowing the doors off an overmatched Hughes. Fighting for the first time since winning The Ultimate Fighter 28 heavyweight crown back in November 2018, Espino was relentless in seeking out the seventh submission win of his career. Expect Espino to get back into the Octagon as soon as possible given his advanced age and all the time he missed due to hand surgery.
Returning Sept. 26
HeavyweightUFC
September 8, 2020
Espino will take on Jeff Hughes at UFC 253 on September 26, ESPN MMA reports.
ANALYSIS
Espino will be making his return to the Octagon after having hand surgery back in September of 2019. This will be his first fight since submitting Justin Frazier back in November 2018. Espino and Hughes will be fighting at heavyweight.
Out until 2020
HeavyweightUFC
September 10, 2019
Espino is set to have hand surgery that will keep him sidelined for the rest of 2019, Danny Segura of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Espino will need to take three months off before he can start training again. The former Ultimate Fighter champion has not fought since scoring a first-round win over Justin Frazier via submission last November. The 38-year-old is riding a seven fight winning streak.
