Falls to 0-2 in FOTN candidate
Son lost to Mario Bautista via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 28-29) at UFC San Antonio on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
This had the early makings of a sleeper Fight of the Night candidate, as the two exchanged blows in the center for the majority of the first round. Son did get cut from a Bautista strike, but also landed a heavy knee that was likely the most significant of the round. Entering the second, Son's corner heavily encouraged him to move forward, and he was able to move Bautista towards the fence in search of a takedown. Bautista threatened with a kimura attempt, but Son spun out of it and continued to go to work. He did eventually secure a takedown, but was unable to hold the seemingly larger Bautista down. The two started to exchange again at an even faster pace, and it was Bautista who started to gain momentum and widened his lead in terms of total strikes. Son was really wearing the damage entering the third, but still came out firing. It was apparent that both men were willing to absorb shots in order to land their own, and both slugged it out until the closing seconds. Son proved he had a tremendous chin in this one, but if that's his best quality, he's going to have a hard time moving forward. On the bright side, Son will take home a $50,000 bonus for participating in Saturday's Fight of the Night.

Son showed incredible toughness during this fight. He absorbed over 100 strikes, the majority of which were to the head. Son smiled through it all and kept coming forward. His opponent, Yan, is a master of sport in boxing in Russia and it showed. He constantly peppered Son with hard shots and even landed a head kick and spinning elbow. The Korean would still not go away. Son even landed two takedowns but was hit with elbows from the bottom the second he got Yan down. Son showed good toughness, but it can't be overlooked that he stood in front of Yan with his hands down and showed little head movement. It will be difficult for the Korean to be successful in the UFC if he doesn't improve his defense.
