Saenz lost to Jonathan Martinez via TKO (knee and strikes) at 0:57 of Round 3 at UFC on ESPN+ 31 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Saenz came out aggressive early, using his overhand right to set up a double leg takedown, but Martinez was right back to his feet. The rest of the round played out standing up, with Saenz often charging in and doing a good job defending a steady stream of front kicks from Martinez. He absorbed a noticeable, heavy body shot at the end of the frame, followed by an uppercut, which appeared to turn the momentum of the fight. Saenz continued to fall behind in striking into the second, eating a giant head kick roughly 90 seconds in. He crumbled a bit from there, and was knocked down with another head kick and huge follow-up shot. Saenz was able to weather the storm despite an opened-up cut, but continued to eat body shots. He took one more massive head kick at the end of the frame, but fought back just enough from his back to prevent the referee from stopping the fight. Visibly wobbled coming off his stool, Saenz caught another tough break and absorbed a low blow. After the restart, Saenz recklessly charged forward and was met with a well-timed knee. Martinez just needed a few more follow-up shots and that was all she wrote. Saenz has now dropped back-to-back fights and five of his last seven overall.

Taking on heavy opponent
BantamweightUFC
July 31, 2020
Saenz will square off against a heavy Jonathan Martinez at UFC Las Vegas 5 after Martinez checked in at 140.5 pounds Friday, 4.5 pounds over the limit for the bout, Alexander K. Lee of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Saenz will continue with the fight anyway but will receive 30 percent of Martinez's purse as compensation. Saenz is looking to bounce back from a rough Round 1 TKO at the hands of Marlon Vera in his last bout back in March of 2019.
Set for August return
BantamweightUFC
July 5, 2020
Saenz will fight Jonathan Martinez in a bantamweight match at the UFC's August 1 event in Las Vegas, MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Saenz is coming off a Round 1 loss to Marlon Vera via TKO (punches) in March of 2019, setting him up to return to the Octagon after more than a one-year absence. He holds a 5-4 record heading into his 10th career UFC appearance.
Gets finished quickly in Nashville
BantamweightUFC
March 23, 2019
Saenz lost to Marlon Vera via TKO (punches) at 1:25 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night 148 in Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Saenz likes to crash forward with strikes to set up his wrestling game but Vera didn't give the veteran a chance to get comfortable in this fight, dropping him with a straight left when he decided to come forward. While it is true that shots to the back of the head facilitated the stoppage, Saenz looked to be all but out of the fight prior to the legal strikes, leaving little room for any real grievance. Saenz was coming off two solid wins against Merab Dvalishvili and Henry Briones but at 38 years old, it may be time to begin asking if his time as a fighter is drawing to a close. Saenz falls to 13-6 in professional MMA as a result of the loss.
Won't appear at UFC 235
BantamweightUFC
February 27, 2019
Saenz will not fight at UFC 235 as UFC is not seeking a replacement for Marlon Vera (illness), Aaron Bronsteter of TSN.ca reports.
ANALYSIS
UFC 235 will go in with only 12 fights on the card as the bout between Vera and Saenz couldn't happen due to Vera' health. Saenz is now in search of a new date and opponent to continue trying to pick up momentum after his victory over Merab Dvalishvili at UFC Fight Night in December.
In need of new opponent
BantamweightUFC
February 27, 2019
Saenz might not appear at UFC 235 after his opponent, Marlon Vera, was forced to withdraw due to illness, UFC announced Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Saenz was set to take on Vera in Las Vegas at UFC 235 on March 2, but his appearance at the event is now in jeopardy. A search is likely ongoing to find him a new opponent in the octagon, but with a short time frame to find somebody it's uncertain if anything will turn up.
