Can't get offense going
MiddleweightUFC
January 20, 2021
Perez lost to Dalcha Lungiambula via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Island 8 on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Perez stayed alive early despite a near-instant charge from Lungiambula, who threw strikes to ultimately set up a takedown. Perez fought from his back, however, initially setting up a guillotine but continuing to throw up submissions after giving that up. None were successful, but while the two worked back to the feet, Perez threatened with a d'arce choke. Even though the submissions didn't click, Perez managed to drain the gas tank of his opponent heading into Round 2. Clearly looking to take advantage of Lungiambula's apparent cardio deficiency, Perez went to the body with power shots in Round 2. He ate a big shot of his own, but grabbed an arm on the way down, eventually transitioning to a kimura. Lungiambula proved to be too strong, and the second round ultimately played out similar to the first with Perez largely on his back. Lungiambula did start to connect with ground-and-pound towards the end that opened up a noteworthy cut. Perez spent much of the third round in the clinch and working for a takedown, but Lungiambula's defense held up. While Perez didn't take much more damage, he was unable to generate any offense of significance until the final seconds. It was too little, too late.
