Mermis is likely to be sent to AHL Iowa once Alex Goligoski, who is recovering from a broken fibula, is ready to be activated from the long-term injured reserve list, per Michael Russo and Shayna Goldman of The Athletic on Wednesday.

Goligoski is almost ready to return, so the Wild will need to clear cap space for him soon. Mermis has two goals, five points, 21 PIM, seven hits and 21 blocks in 13 contests this season. He already cleared waivers Friday, so moving him to the AHL would be frictionless.

Mermis opened his NHL account with four points in 10 games for the Devils last year. He also posted 19 points in 53 appearances with AHL Binghamton, but he's never been much of a threat for offense from the blue line. With the Wild, Mermis is likely to serve as a rotational depth option on the left side, but he's unlikely to unseat Carson Soucy from the third pairing. The 27-year-old Mermis will most likely end up on the taxi squad or back in the minors in 2020-21.
