August 3, 2020
The Jets released Enunwa (neck) on Monday, Eric Allen and Randy Lange of the team's official site report.
ANALYSIS
The 28-year-old wideout had previously been placed on the reserve/PUP list in May due to the career-threatening neck injury he suffered early in 2019. The Jets weren't counting on him to contribute at any point in 2020, so his release comes as little surprise. Enunwa, who logged 119 receptions for 1,617 yards and five touchdowns over 41 career games with the Jets, will presumably look to gain full medical clearance from the injury and attempt to find work with another team ahead of the 2021 season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Career outlook uncertain
WRNew York Jets
May 27, 2020
Enunwa (neck) hopes to continue his playing career after 2020, but he admitted Wednesday the decision will be out of his hands, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2014 sixth-round pick was placed on the reserve/PUP list in early May, a move that makes him ineligible to play in 2020 unless the Jets decide to cut him. Enunwa played 66 offensive snaps in the season opener last year, but he never saw the field again due to the neck issues, and there's no guarantee he'll receive medical clearance to resume his career. Doctors will ultimately decide whether the receiver plays in the NFL again.

A career-threatening neck injury will prevent Enunwa -- who saw action in just one games last season -- from playing in 2020, but the wideout hasn't ruled out a return beyond that.
Enunwa clicked with rookie QB Sam Darnold out of the gate last year, racking up 36 targets, 21 catches, 278 yards and a touchdown over the season's first four games. Then Enunwa hurt his ankle, and while he returned a few weeks later, he was never entirely the same. On the year, Enunwa's stats were meager - 6.6 YPT, only one TD on 68 targets, but the fast start showed he had recovered completely from his 2016 neck injury and offered a glimpse of his impressive physical skills. At 6-2, 225, Enunwa is big and powerful, but he also runs a 4.45 40, giving him unusual speed for someone with his frame. The Jets apparently saw enough, as they extended him with a four-year, $36 million deal in December. The team also signed slot man Jamison Crowder this offseason, meaning Enunwa, who usually lined up inside last year, will now get pushed outside. New coach Adam Gase intends to expand Enunwa's route tree, using him outside and down the field. Robby Anderson is the team's fastest wideout and best deep threat, but he's not likely to finish among the league leaders in volume. Given Enunwa's skills and new contract, we can safely assume he is in the mix.
A bulging disc in his neck cost Enunwa the entire 2017 season, one in which he was slated to be the Jets' top target. A year later he faces more competition, as the emergence of Robby Anderson and presence of Terrelle Pryor (ankle) and Jermaine Kearse will make looks harder to find. But at 6-2, 225, and with 4.45 speed, Enunwa has rare physical talent, and his route running improved in 2016 when he managed 14.8 YPC and 8.2 YPT. He was making progress in his recovery this spring, and that the Jets offered him a $2.9 million, second-round tender rather than a $1.9 million, original-round tender indicates they expect him at full strength, something confirmed by coach Todd Bowles. Enunwa participated in individual drills during OTAs and returned to full-team contact work early in training camp, but he then suffered a thumb injury that's expected to keep him out until mid-August.
With Eric Decker hurt and the Jets' passing game in disarray, Enunwa emerged as one of the team's leading targets, putting up strong per-play numbers -- 14.8 YPC, 8.2 YPT -- under the circumstances. At 6-2, 225 and with 4.45 speed, Enunwa has the physical dimensions to be a star, but his route running, improved in 2016, is still a work in progress. Enunwa is also a strong run blocker and tough to bring down after the catch, but he'll have to wait until 2018 to flash those skills again, as he was diagnosed with a bulging disc in his neck during training camp and is now expected to miss all of 2017.
With Devin Smith still recovering from a torn ACL, Enunwa will get an opportunity to compete for the No. 3 wideout spot. Unfortunately, it's a position that doesn't lend itself to a ton of fantasy value, as Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker will likely see a huge share of the WR targets, while running backs Matt Forte and Bilal Powell, plus tight end Jace Amaro, figure to eat up much of the other work.
As a rookie in 2014, the former sixth-round draft pick was active for just one game last season with the Jets after an injury freed up a roster spot. It's going to be a tough road for Enunwa to get back on the official roster, but he'll look to compete in training camp for a place on the squad.
Enunwa is in many ways a Stephen Hill clone, combining prototypical size with great speed and somewhat raw receiving skills. He'll likely spend the bulk of the season on the Jets' practice squad.
