The strength of the Steeler defense is the depth of their linebacker corps, which can present a challenge in terms of playing time for guys like Moats and Jarvis Jones. When he is on the field, Moats makes the most of his opportunities, but it still isn’t enough to warrant much fantasy consideration.
Moats recorded 23 tackles and four sacks in 16 games, including nine starts for the Steelers in 2014. Now that he has been retained by the team, he'll continue to provide the Steelers with outside linebacker depth, as well contributions on special teams.
The Steelers' linebacking corps was bolstered by drafting Ryan Shazier, which could cut in to Moats' playing time, limiting his fantasy value.
Entering his fourth year in the league, Moats is a solid reserve linebacker and special teams ace. He is returning from an ankle injury suffered late last season.
Moats is a decent young player best known for being the guy that laid the hit that ended Brett Favre's consecutive games streak. He may have been moved around too much early in his career in the team's previous 3-4 defense, but he'll settle in as an outside linebacker in the new 4-3 run by Dave Wannstedt. Unfortunately, he's not slated to start, so he'll serve as a valuable depth guy and special teams player until injuries strike.
Best known for being the guy who ended Brett Favre's consecutive games streak with a hit the previous week, Moats was forced into plenty of action as a rookie. However, much of that was due to injuries, and with him likely making a move to the inside this season, he'll be mostly a backup as long as other stay healthy. This does look like a fine sixth-round choice by the Bills in 2010, however.
Bills head coach Chan Gailey’s initial plan is to have Moats, a rookie sixth-round draft pick, move to inside linebacker in Buffalo’s 3-4 defensive scheme. Moats was a dominant defensive end at small school James Madison, but he's not big enough to play DE in the pros and probably not tall enough to play OLB. So the team will move him inside, where he has very little chance of starting as a rookie. He was so dominant in college, however, that he's a good project for the team, and he might be put on the field in special packages to rush the passer. No IDP usefulness yet, but keep an eye on him.
