The veteran defensive end was traded to the Dolphins in early March. He will provide the team with depth at each end position but will certainly see a reduction in snaps with Cameron Wake, Charles Harris, and Andre Branch all possibly ahead of him on the depth chart.
Chris Long is off to New England, and the Rams didn't add anyone to pick up the starting role left behind. That leaves Hayes to take over, after he gave a preview of it while filling in forthe injured Quinn in 2015. Donald and Quinn will take up most of the attention from opposing blockers, leaving Hayes with ample one-on-one opportunities, in addition to the presumed uptick in playing time. After tallying 53 tackles and 5.5 sacks in just 581 snaps last year, he should provide DL2 utility in a role that could push for 800 snaps.
Hayes was thrust into the starting role in 2014 due to Chris Long's injury, and he performed decently. He picked up 42 tackles and four sacks, but with Long healthy, will be relegated to backup duty once again. That spot may actually be a better fit for him, as he had more sacks in 2013 despite playing less time.
Chris Long and Robert Quinn may have the starting positions locked down, but Hayes is a valuable backup that ensures Long and Quinn don't get worn down throughout the game. Hayes had 28 tackles, five sacks, an interception and two fumble recoveries in 2013 and should put up similar numbers this season.
Hayes will provide a rest for starters Chris Long and Robert Quinn as the backup defensive end. Hayes had quite a productive season as a backup in 2012, tallying 35 tackles and seven sacks, and if Long or Quinn goes down, may be a decent IDP.
Hayes is expected to start the year as the primary back-up behind Robert Quinn at right defensive end.
Hayes was plagued with injuries in 2010, but hopes to bounce back as a starting defensive end in 2011. He is a pass rusher with speed, and could have an impact with added size in the middle of the defensive line, possibly taking some attention and allowing him chances to get to the opposing quarterback.
Hayes had a very strong 2009 with career-highs of 82 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles. 2010 will give him plenty of opportunities to improve on those numbers, by being his first full year as the starting defensive end.
Hayes, who is considered a raw talent, recorded just one sack last year. He will be utilized as a backup at the defensive end position in 2009.
Hayes is expected to add depth to the defensive line.
