The Patriots placed Hurd on the reserve/retired list Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hurd has decided to hang up the cleats after spending a week with the Patriots, but since he's still under contract, he'll officially be placed on the reserve/retired list. The Baylor product missed his rookie season due to a back injury, then suffered a torn ACL ahead of the 2020 campaign, which was followed by a setback in 2021 that led to him being waived with an injury settlement. Despite being a 2019 third-round pick, Hurd never appeared in a regular-season game during his NFL tenure.

September 5, 2021
Hurd might not be active for the 49ers' Week 1 clash against the Lions, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers kept six wide receivers on their 53-man roster but only five will suit up, and that final spot is likely to be a coin toss between Hurd and Jauan Jennings. Hurd is the more versatile of the two, but that won't necessarily equate to active status Week 1.

2019
A 2019 third-round pick, Hurd entered the NFL with only one year of experience playing wide receiver, having spent the first three years of his college career at running back. There was even talk of moving him to tight end, but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan seems to view Hurd as an oversized wide receiver (6-5, 230 pounds). Regardless, injuries have been the dominant story of Hurd's pro career so far, with a back issue costing him his rookie season and a preseason ACL tear wiping out his 2020. He thus enters his third year with the Niners having yet to play in a regular-season game, likely battling for a depth role at wide receiver. The Niners don't have much at the position behind starters Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, so there is a decent opportunity ahead for Hurd, even if a true breakout is a longshot at this point.
Hurd essentially redshirted his rookie year with a back injury after being selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The 6-5 wideout has a unique combination of size and athleticism as a former running back. Prior to his injury, the 49ers' coaching staff envisioned Hurd as a potential option in the slot as well as a move tight end. We did get a brief glimpse of his ability in a two-touchdown preseason showing before he got hurt, but Hurd remains a giant question mark after a summer ACL tear ruled him out for the 2020 season.
The 49ers expended a third-round pick on Hurd, but there may not be a rookie with more question marks surrounding his role heading into the 2019 season. This isn't meant to be a slight on the talented prospect, but more of a question regarding where and when he'll be on the football field this season. The 6-5 Baylor product was drafted as a wideout, but he was recruited as a five-star running back, and the 49ers have already stated they plan on trying him out at tight end in the future. San Francisco clearly has a talented player with size and athleticism to play conceivably anywhere on the field, and it will be exciting to see how offensive wizard Kyle Shanahan chooses to deploy his new tool.
