Outplayed by McCown
QBPhiladelphia Eagles
August 22, 2019
Kessler completed three of five passes for 34 yards and rushed once for no gain in Thursday's 26-15 preseason loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Kessler got the start with Carson Wentz taking the night off, but he was significantly outplayed by veteran Josh McCown, who threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns after taking over for Kessler late in the first quarter. The 26-year-old quarterback seems destined for the No. 3 role behind Wentz and McCown. The game was shortened early in the fourth quarter due to lightning, so at least rookie fifth-rounder Clayton Thorson didn't get a chance to try to leapfrog Kessler on the depth chart.

2016
Before being traded from the Browns to the Jaguars this offseason, Kessler played in 12 games over two seasons in Cleveland. A 2016 third-round pick out of USC, he had a respectable 7.1 yards per attempt with six touchdowns and two interceptions as a low-volume passer, but went winless in eight starts during his rookie season. Kessler appeared in only three games for the Browns in 2017, and was buried on the depth chart throughout the season. The 25-year-old will have a much more defined role in Jacksonville as Blake Bortles' backup, with the only other quarterback currently on the roster being 2018 sixth-round pick Tanner Lee. Kessler remains a relatively unproven commodity to serve as the team's only real option at backup quarterback, as the Jaguars are clearly expecting Bortles -- fresh off a new contract extension -- to serve as signal caller for the near future.
Starting eight of his nine games as a rookie last season, Kessler was adequate in an offense that had little going for it. But he had too few big plays -- he completed only six attempts over 20 yards -- and took too many sacks (21 on 216 dropbacks), partly because he held onto the ball too long. Kessler entered the offseason program as a favorite to enter Week 1 as the starter, but he fell behind both Brock Osweiler and DeShone Kizer within the first two weeks of training camp. Relegated to third-team work throughout much of camp and the preseason, Kessler no longer seems to be in the mix for the starting job.
The Browns drafted Kessler a bit earlier than expected during the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, as the former USC standout has less-than-stellar measurables and throwing ability by pro standards. He'll still be given a chance at the starting quarterback job in Cleveland, but it's a long shot with experienced options such as Josh McCown and Robert Griffin also in the hunt for the top spot. At this point, it looks like Kessler will head into his rookie campaign with a backup role.
