Knee
October 1, 2019
The Patriots released Meredith (knee) from the PUP list Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Meredith was initially slated to miss six weeks with this knee injury, but he hasn't progressed in his recovery like the Patriots hoped. The 27-year-old wideout only played in six games over the last two seasons, recording nine receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown, so he doesn't appear to hold enough upside to justify another team picking him up until he's fully healthy.

Though Meredith was returning from a torn ACL and MCL that sidelined him for all of 2017, New Orleans saw enough potential in the 6-foot-3 wideout during his first two seasons in Chicago to ink him to a two-year deal in free agency last April. The gambit didn't pay off, however, as Meredith failed to recapture his prior form during the preseason and ended up being a healthy scratch for the first two games. He debuted in Week 3 but was never able to carve out a meaningful role in the rotation. While Meredith nabbed nine of 10 targets for 114 yards and a score, he played less than 50 percent of the snaps in each of his six games. Clearly still bothered by the prior left knee injury, Meredith opted for arthroscopic surgery in November, spelling an end to his season. He participated in the start of training camp, only to be released after a few days. Meredith was subsequently signed by the Patriots, but he has yet to get into the practice mix, and could start the season on the PUP list. With that in mind, Meredith is off the short-term fantasy radar, though he could provide the New England offense with a boost as the season rolls along.
A former undrafted free agent, Meredith was in line for a big role last season before suffering a torn ACL and MCL during the preseason. He had a strong year in 2016 despite not even suiting up until Week 3, with 9.2 YPT and 60 catches in the 12 games in which he saw at least 40 snaps. At 6-3, 207, Meredith has good size and is also fast - 4.42 40 - with the physical specs to be a No. 1 WR. As such, the Saints signed him to a two-year, $9.5 million offer sheet this April - the Bears declined to match - pairing him with Drew Brees. Michael Thomas is the team's clear No. 1 WR, and the Saints morphed into a run-first offense last year, but Meredith could be the team's No. 2 with Ted Ginn in a field-stretching role. Meredith was held out of team drills during OTAs, but he returned as a full participant for the start of training camp.
With Alshon Jeffery gone, Meredith, a former undrafted free agent, was in line a for a big role this season before suffering a torn ACL and MCL during the preseason. Meredith had a strong year in 2016 despite not even suiting up until Week 3, with 9.2 YPT and 60 catches in the 12 games where he saw at least 40 snaps. At 6-3, 207, Meredith has good size, and he's fast -- 4.42 40 -- with the physical specs to be the No. 1 WR. He'll hope to recover in time for the 2018 season.
Meredith, a local product from Illinois State, figures to just be a camp body for the Bears after signing with the team when he wasn’t selected in the NFL draft. He offers an interesting blend of size (6-foot-3) and speed (4.42 40-yard dash time at his pro day), but his lack of experience against high-end competition could be exposed in training camp. The practice squad is a more likely destination for him than the 53-man roster.
