Training Camp Notes: Aug. 14

This article is part of our Training Camp Notes series.

We have some preseason games under our belt now and that's the majority of the news we have today, though there are some additional injury updates.

  • Justin Fields turned in an impressive statistical performance, completing 14 of 20 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown. He added five carries for 33 yards. It's worth noting that Fields made a number of mistakes early, which can be expected, and that he did the majority of his damage against third-string defenders. Even so, the calls for Fields to start Week 1 will only get louder.
  • David Montgomery exited the same game after one snap, limping off the field without assistance. The injury is presumed to be not serious, as Montgomery remained on the sideline after his exit without his helmet.
  • Melvin Gordon missed Saturday's preseason game with a minor groin injury. This is likely a precaution, but remains worth monitoring. Javonte Williams could trend up as a result.
  • On the other side of the game, Tua Tagovailoa showed promise in his first preseason action. He completed eight of his 11 pass attempts for 99 yards. He ended his performance with an interception, which leaves a sour note on the appearance. He did the majority of his damage on a 50-yard pass to Mike Gesicki.
  • Also in Miami, Malcolm Brown was the first running back on the field. It's difficult to imagine that Brown will be the workhorse back in Miami, though it appears he could take touches away from the team's primary back — presumably Myles Gaskin — as he did in Los Angeles last season.
  • Another indication of a potential Week 1 starter, Taysom Hill started Saturday's preseason game for the Saints. He played three series, completing eight of 12 passes for 81 yards and an interception. He didn't have a rushing attempt.
  • Rondale Moore was very involved in the Cardinals' offense Friday. There wasn't much notable in his production, but he did see four targets and also got two carries. The carries in particular are notable in regards to projecting his usage in the regular season.
  • Kyle Pitts sat out the Falcons' preseason opener, though the explanation was that he was caught up enough with the offense to not need additional playing time. That's a good sign, and he should have the chance to immediately be the second-most targeted player on the team.

Injury updates:

  • Some positive news in Philly, as DeVonta Smith is day-to-day. He has yet to return to practice, but he is trending in the right direction and could return to the field in the coming days.
  • Sticking with the Eagles, Kerryon Johnson is dealing with a knee injury. There's no official diagnosis, but given his history with knee injuries there has to be at least some concern.
  • In Dallas, Dak Prescott is expected to participate in the Cowboys' third preseason game. The news surrounding his shoulder injury continues to trend positively.
  • Dalton Schultz is expected to be ready for the regular season after an injury scare regarding his ankle. Blake Jarwin has also returned from his ACL tear, so it's unclear how the target split will occur at the position.
  • James Washington remains sidelined with a lower-leg injury and has missed nearly a week of practice. Already behind JuJu Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool on the depth chart, Washington is missing valuable practice tine.
