Bye Week: Buffalo, Cleveland, Miami, New England, New York Jets, San Francisco

Here are my rankings (if you want a second opinion, please see our formula-based projections - these are not tied into my rankings at all) for the coming week at each position to help you decide your starting lineup. Our rankings are based on the following scoring system: four points for a passing touchdown; six points for a rushing/receiving touchdown; one point for every 20 passing yards; and one point for every 10 rushing/receiving yards. Most importantly, the default rankings are now for PPR leagues.

The vast majority of the fantasy football universe plays with some form of PPR -whether it's a full point or 1/2 point. ESPN's default is full-point PPR, Yahoo's is .5 PPR. The DFS games for the vast majority are either half or full point PPR. I will update these during the week, usually twice per week to account for injury or other news during practice. The timing of those updates will vary based on the news at hand and my schedule for the given week. But the first of those updates usually won't happen until Thursday. At any rate, I will post a "last updated" note at the top of the article, or an "update in progress" note if it's while I'm doing it. If there is no such note, that means it's my first pass at the rankings for this current week.

By all means, if you want to discuss a rank, or want me to add a player, chime in on the comments. I try to be receptive to your feedback and try to respond to most comments, though on occasion the volume can be quite thick. This first week in particular, but in other weeks as well, I will change ranks according to injuries and sometimes even a change of heart. Please refer to the rankings first when asking "should I start Player A vs. Player B?". And then refer to the rankings again before asking a generic starting decision question. If you really desire a response to a starting question that doesn't have added complexity, please use our Ask An Expert service - it comes with your subscription. Otherwise, my response will correspond with the rankings. If I rank one player before another, that's how I plan on making my starting decisions.

Quarterback

1.Patrick Mahomes KC at LAR
2.Drew Brees NO vs. Phi
3.*Jared Goff LA vs. KC
Note: Should be in line for a huge game against the Chiefs - the game has been moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles.
4.Matt Ryan ATL vs. Dal
5.*Aaron Rodgers GB at Sea
Note: (Knee) Held out of Monday's practice, but participated on Tuesday. The Packers have the short week, going on the road to play in Seattle on Thursday.
6.Philip Rivers LAC vs. Den
7.*Cam Newton CAR at Det
Note: (Shoulder) Limited practice Wednesday, estimated to be limited during the Panthers' walk-through Thursday. ***Cleared from the injury list Friday.***
8.Carson Wentz PHI at NO
9.*Ben Roethlisberger PIT at Jax
Note: Might be under-ranked here, under two potentially outdated narratives - Ben's road production, and the relative strength of the Jags defense. I might revisit this later in the week. Moved up one spot, but barring injury I probably won't move him farther up.
10.Russell Wilson SEA vs. GB
Note: Very efficient against the Rams, though 12 of his 26 passing attempts came late (H/T Mario Puig). The good news is that he's running more - some by design, some scrambling.
11.Dak Prescott DAL at Atl
Note: Came up huge against the Eagles on the heels of his disastrous game the week before against the Titans. He now faces a plus matchup against the Falcons.
12.Eli Manning NYG vs. TB
Note: Manning's three-TD performance could have been better - twice he missed a wide-open OBJ, and twice OBJ dropped easy catches.
13.Andrew Luck IND vs. Ten
14.Ryan Fitzpatrick TB at NYG
Note: Getting another start despite the crushing loss to the Redskins last week, where he threw for 400+ but turned the ball over thrice.
15.Deshaun Watson HOU at Was
16.Marcus Mariota TEN at Ind
17.Kirk Cousins MIN at Chi
18.Mitchell Trubisky CHI vs. Min
Note: Had by far his best passing game of the season against the Lions. The competition will step up in class Sunday night in the form of the Vikes.
19.Blake Bortles JAC vs. Pit
Note: Quietly had a really good game against the Colts, but it got overlooked because the Jaguars still lost - their fifth loss in a row.
20.Matthew Stafford DET vs. Car
21.Josh Rosen ARZ vs. Oak
22.*Lamar Jackson BAL vs. Cin
Note: There was some talk that Jackson would get a full series this week even before the news on Flacco came out. However, he's not a lock to start if Flacco can't go. Had to miss Thursday's practice with a stomach issue. ***Cleared off the injury list and is now expected to start.***
23.Alex Smith WAS vs. Hou
24.Case Keenum DEN at LAC
25.Andy Dalton CIN at Bal
26.Derek Carr OAK at Ari
Note: Threw the ball down to the ground on a 4th-and-5 play with 5:00 remaining. Pathetic.
27.*Robert Griffin BAL vs. Cin
Note: If Flacco can't play, it could be RG3 and not Jackson getting the start. Practiced with the starters Thursday after both Flacco and Lamar Jackson were held out. ***Expected to back up Jackson, even though the Ravens haven't made an official announcement.***
28.*Joe Flacco BAL vs. Cin
Note: Injured his hip during the bye week, and is uncertain for this week's game - but will start if healthy. Not spotted at practice on Wednesday or Thursday. ***Listed as doubtful.***

Running Backs

1.Todd Gurley LA vs. KC
2.Saquon Barkley NYG vs. TB
3.Melvin Gordon LAC vs. Den
4.David Johnson ARZ vs. Oak
Note: It's amazing what a difference a competent OC can make.
5.Alvin Kamara NO vs. Phi
6.Christian McCaffrey CAR at Det
7.Ezekiel Elliott DAL at Atl
8.Kareem Hunt KC at LAR
9.*James Conner PIT at Jax
Note: Still in the concussion protocol, but expected to practice Wednesday. Meanwhile, Lev Bell never reported and thus can't return this year. Full practices Wednesday and Thursday. ***Cleared from the concussion protocol.***
10.Aaron Jones GB at Sea
Note: Finally got the snap count and workload that nearly everyone outside Mike McCarthy's family was clamoring for, and should continue to do so following his outburst against the Dolphins.
11.Leonard Fournette JAC vs. Pit
Note: Huge workload right away - 24 carries, five catches - in his first game back.
12.*Joe Mixon CIN at Bal
Note: (Knee) Limited practice participant Thursday - it's still uncertain whether Mixon had a setback or whether this was done for preventative/rest reasons. ***Full practice Friday, cleared from the injury list.***
13.Kerryon Johnson DET vs. Car
Note: Lost a fumble, but scored twice to ease the pain of that, including one in the air. Even with Riddick back he still caught six passes.
14.Marlon Mack IND vs. Ten
Note: Rested Wednesday, but no injury.
15.Mark Ingram NO vs. Phi
16.*Dalvin Cook MIN at Chi
Note: I'm assuming that he'll get a full load coming off the bye, given how he looked against the Lions before the bye. Full-go in practices moving forward.
17.Tevin Coleman ATL vs. Dal
18.Lamar Miller HOU at Was
19.Tarik Cohen CHI vs. Min
20.Alex Collins BAL vs. Cin
21.*Adrian Peterson WAS vs. Hou
Note: (Shoulder) Limited practice Wednesday, as has been the case in recent weeks.
22.Dion Lewis TEN at Ind
23.Jalen Richard OAK at Ari
24.*Phillip Lindsay DEN at LAC
Note: ***The Broncos could take a 'hot hand' approach with all three backs this week, with Royce Freeman returning, according to coach Vance Joseph.***
25.*Chris Carson SEA vs. GB
Note: (Hip) Listed as limited at Monday's walk-through, but he's expected to play Thursday night. Will return and start, though whether he'll get the same workload as before is uncertain.
26.Jordan Howard CHI vs. Min
27.*Peyton Barber TB at NYG
Note: (Ankle/Shoulder) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Full practice Friday, no longer carries an injury designation.***
28.*Josh Adams PHI at NO
Note: In line to get more work going forward.
29.Doug Martin OAK at Ari
30.Theo Riddick DET vs. Car
31.Austin Ekeler LAC vs. Den
Note: Modest workload against the Raiders last week - but had a touchdown overturned by a holding penalty that doesn't show up in his line.
32.Latavius Murray MIN at Chi
33.T.J. Yeldon JAC vs. Pit
34.*Giovani Bernard CIN at Bal
Note: Joe Mixon was limited in Thursday's practice - still waiting to hear the reason for this.
35.Derrick Henry TEN at Ind
36.Jacquizz Rodgers TB at NYG
Note: Had a whopping 102 receiving yards, but that was tarnished by a fumble on the last legit scoring threat for the Bucs.
37.*Royce Freeman DEN at LAC
Note: (Ankle) On track to return to practice this week. Returned to a limited practice Wednesday, but looked merely ok, not good.
38.*Mike Davis SEA vs. GB
Note: If Carson plays, I'll move Davis down considerably. Carson will return and start. The Seahawks have remained silent whether it'll be Davis or Penny who is next in line, but my guess is it's Davis.
39.Nyheim Hines IND vs. Ten
40.Kapri Bibbs WAS vs. Hou
Note: Bibbs was effective in replacing Chris Thompson last week, but still netted only five touches.
41.Devontae Booker DEN at LAC
42.Javorius Allen BAL vs. Cin
43.Alfred Blue HOU at Was
44.*Wendell Smallwood PHI at NO
Note: Losing carries to Josh Adams going forward.
45.Rashaad Penny SEA vs. GB
Note: It's almost as if Penny looked like a first-round pick out there - 12 carries, 108 yards. Moved down a few notches with the news that Chris Carson will start Thursday night.
46.Jaylen Samuels PIT at Jax
47.Ito Smith ATL vs. Dal
48.Spencer Ware KC at LAR
49.Jamaal Williams GB at Sea
Note: Williams had just three carries as the Packers finally committed fully to Aaron Jones.
50.*Corey Clement PHI at NO
Note: Losing carries to Josh Adams going forward.
51.Wayne Gallman NYG vs. TB
52.Chase Edmonds ARZ vs. Oak
53.LeGarrette Blount DET vs. Car
54.Malcolm Brown LA vs. KC
55.Jordan Wilkins IND vs. Ten
56.Carlos Hyde JAC vs. Pit
57.Stevan Ridley PIT at Jax
58.DeAndre Washington OAK at Ari
59.*Ty Montgomery BAL vs. Cin
Note: No guarantee to be active this week - depends upon 'how he looks in practice.'
60.*Travaris Cadet CAR at Det
Note: Likely inactive this week after just signing with the Panthers, replacing C.J. Anderson on the roster.
61.*Cameron Artis-Payne CAR at Det
62.*Chris Thompson WAS vs. Hou
Note: (Ribs) Still dealing with 'considerable' pain - that doesn't sound promising for his Week 11 availability. Not yet practicing as of Thursday - unlikely to play this week. ***Ruled out again this week.***
63.*Ronald Jones II TB at NYG
Note: (Hamstring) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Out again this week.***
64.*Darren Sproles PHI at NO
Note: (Hamstring) Expected to miss multiple weeks after his latest setback.
65.*D'Onta Foreman HOU at Was
Note: (Achilles) Could have window to be activated from PUP list started this week, and subsequently could return to practice. Cleared to begin practicing on Wednesday. ***Has begun practicing, but isn't expected to play this week.***

8.Davante Adams GB at Sea
9.Mike Evans TB at NYG
10.Emmanuel Sanders DEN at LAC

73.Josh Doctson WAS vs. Hou

78.Jalen Richard OAK at Ari
79.*Jimmy Graham GB at Sea
Note: (Knee) Didn't practice Tuesday, but did accompany the team on their flight to Seattle on Tuesday night. Revenge game? As usual, the injury designation has been removed and Graham is fully cleared for Thursday night's game. ***Suffered a broken thumb in the Thursday night game.***
80.Jack Doyle IND vs. Ten
Note: Led the Colts' TE's in snaps but saw Ebron score thrice while he was shut out. However, he did get down to the 1-yard line on one of his receptions.
81.Austin Hooper ATL vs. Dal
82.Jeff Heuerman DEN at LAC
83.Michael Crabtree BAL vs. Cin
84.Anthony Miller CHI vs. Min
85.*John Ross CIN at Bal
Note: (Groin) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Full practice Friday, listed as questionable but expected to play.***
86.Austin Ekeler LAC vs. Den
Note: Modest workload against the Raiders last week - but had a touchdown overturned by a holding penalty that doesn't show up in his line.
87.Latavius Murray MIN at Chi
88.T.J. Yeldon JAC vs. Pit
89.*Giovani Bernard CIN at Bal
Note: Joe Mixon was limited in Thursday's practice - still waiting to hear the reason for this.
90.Jacquizz Rodgers TB at NYG
Note: Had a whopping 102 receiving yards, but that was tarnished by a fumble on the last legit scoring threat for the Bucs.
91.Curtis Samuel CAR at Det
92.Christian Kirk ARZ vs. Oak
93.D.J. Moore CAR at Det
94.*Mike Davis SEA vs. GB
Note: If Carson plays, I'll move Davis down considerably. Carson will return and start. The Seahawks have remained silent whether it'll be Davis or Penny who is next in line, but my guess is it's Davis.
95.*Royce Freeman DEN at LAC
Note: (Ankle) On track to return to practice this week. Returned to a limited practice Wednesday, but looked merely ok, not good.
96.*Bruce Ellington DET vs. Car
Note: ***It looks like not only will Ellington play, but he could be pretty busy with Marvin Jones hurting.***

14.Chris Boswell PIT at Jax
15.Dan Bailey MIN at Chi
16.Josh Lambo JAC vs. Pit
Note: Had a PAT blocked and missed a 52-yarder against the Colts - first two misses of the year.
17.*Brett Maher DAL at Atl
Note: Has now missed a field goal attempt in three consecutive games.
18.Adam Vinatieri IND vs. Ten
19.*Dustin Hopkins WAS vs. Hou
Note: Held out of practice Wednesday and Thursday with a groin injury. ***Now 'pain-free' and expects to play.***

Note: Won't be replaced despite hitting four goalposts in the win over the Lions.
21.Brandon McManus DEN at LAC
22.Matt Prater DET vs. Car
23.Randy Bullock CIN at Bal
24.*Cairo Santos TB at NYG
Note: Signed to replace Chandler Catanzaro (Once Catan-zero, now Total Zero), who was waived by the Bucs.
25.*Phil Dawson ARZ vs. Oak
Note: (Hip) Missed Wednesday's practice. ***Questionable to play, and the Cards signed Matt McCrane in case he can't go.***
26.*Matt McCrane ARZ vs. Oak
Note: ***Signed by the Cardinals in case Dawson can't go.***
27.Daniel Carlson OAK at Ari
28.*Giorgio Tavecchio ATL vs. Dal
Note: ***Bryant is back this week, but the Falcons are keeping Tavecchio around in case of a setback, though he'll be inactive this week.***

Defenses

1.*Los Angeles Chargers vs. Den
Note: Joey Bosa (knee) could make his 2018 debut this week.
2.Baltimore Ravens vs. Cin
3.Arizona Cardinals vs. Oak
Note: Five sacks against the Chiefs last week, now they get to face the Raiders at home. Yum.
4.Houston Texans at Was
Note: J.J. Watt and crew get to tee off against the Redskins' injury-wracked offensive line.
5.Chicago Bears vs. Min
6.New Orleans Saints vs. Phi
Note: The Eagles' offensive line is clearly not the same force it was last season.
7.Carolina Panthers at Det
Note: Their opponent, the Lions, have allowed 16 sacks the last two weeks - that should cure any hangover from the Thursday whooping at the hands of the Steelers.
8.Pittsburgh Steelers at Jax
9.Washington Redskins vs. Hou
10.*Seattle Seahawks vs. GB
Note: K.J. Wright (knee) was unable to practice Tuesday.
11.New York Giants vs. TB
12.*Minnesota Vikings at Chi
Note: Xavier Rhodes (foot) should be 100 percent following the bye.
13.*Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Pit
Note: A.J. Bouye (calf) had a full practice Thursday and should return for the first time since Week 7.
14.*Atlanta Falcons vs. Dal
Note: Deion Jones (foot) is getting closer to returning, but it probably won't happen this week.
15.*Denver Broncos at LAC
Note: Bradley Roby (ankle) practiced Thursday and should return this week.
16.Indianapolis Colts vs. Ten
17.Los Angeles Rams vs. KC
18.*Tennessee Titans at Ind
Note: Lavonte David could miss this week with a sprained MCL - he is the Bucs' leading tackler.
19.*Dallas Cowboys at Atl
Note: Leighton Vander Esch has been a tackle machine with Sean Lee out.
20.*Philadelphia Eagles at NO
Note: Ronald Darby is out with a torn ACL, and the Eagles could still be without Jalen Mills (foot) and Sidney Jones (hamstring). Not good when you're about to play the Saints in New Orleans. Jones returned to a full practice Thursday, but Mills remains out.
21.*Green Bay Packers at Sea
Note: Blake Martinez (ankle) was a limited practice participant on Tuesday.
22.Tampa Bay Buccaneers at NYG
23.*Kansas City Chiefs at LAR
Note: Anthony Hitchens (ribs) had a full practice Thursday.
24.*Cincinnati Bengals at Bal
Note: Marvin Lewis is taking over the defensive coordinator duties, but can he heal the linebacking corps, Dennard and Kirkpatrick? Kirkpatrick and Dennard have had limited practices this week, but the Bengals are essentially down to two healthy linebackers. Seems fine.
25.Detroit Lions vs. Car
26.Oakland Raiders at Ari
