Tagovailoa announced Friday via his personal Twitter account that he has committed to join Maryland as a transfer from Alabama.
The relationship Tagovailoa's older brother, Tua, had with Maryland head coach Mike Locksley from his time with Alabama's coaching staff from 2016 through 2018 likely factored heavily into Taulia's decision to head to College Park. The younger Tagovailoa served as the No. 3 quarterback for most of his true freshman season with the Crimson Tide, appearing in five games and completing nine of 12 passes for 100 yards and one touchdown. As an undergraduate transfer, Tagovailoa will have to sit out the 2020 season before debuting for the Terrapins in 2021 with three years of eligibility remaining. With incumbent starting quarterback Josh Jackson set to complete his eligibility after the 2020 season, Tagovailoa should get the chance to compete with classmate Lance LeGendre for the top spot on the Maryland depth chart in 2021.
