Payton started six games in 2019 and completed 63.6 percent of his throws for 7.6 yards per attempt and a 12:7 TD:INT, but that wasn't enough for him to hold off redshirt freshman Grayson McCall for the top spot on the depth chart in 2020. With McCall emerging as one of the top signal-callers in the Group of Five ranks and leading Coastal Carolina to an undefeated regular season, Payton was unlikely to have a path to a starting role for the duration of his career had he remained with the Chanticleers. As a result, he'll look for an opportunity elsewhere for his final two years of eligibility.
