Enters transfer portal
May 5, 2019
Rivers announced Saturday via his personal Twitter account that he has entered the transfer portal with the intention of leaving Illinois.
ANALYSIS
Rivers started three games early in the 2018 season, completing 63 percent of his passes for three touchdowns and one pick while averaging 140.7 yards per game. Eventually, those poor numbers led to his benching, although he did compete throughout the season and earn some reps later. The competition at quarterback should be tougher this season with players like Coran Taylor and Matt Robinson already on campus, as well as the team's interest in grad transfer Tommy Stevens. As such, Rivers is looking into outside opportunities and will look to move on to what he perceives to be a better situation.
