Wakefield placed his name in the transfer portal Monday and is set to leave West Virginia, Chris Anderson of 247Sports.com
ANALYSIS
Wakefield joined the Mountaineers in January as a graduate transfer from Louisville, but he'll end up sticking around in Morgantown for just nine months. A lack of playing time is likely Wakefield's main impetus for moving on, as he failed to crack the team's two-deep at receiver coming out of training camp and didn't record any statistics in West Virginia's season-opening win over FCS Eastern Kentucky. Since the NCAA is granting blanket transfers for players choosing to sit out the 2020 season, Wakefield should be able to play out his sixth and final year of college football in 2021. He tallied seven receptions for 80 yards during his time at Louisville, so Wakefield should have a decent shot at finding another opportunity at a smaller FBS program or with an FCS school.
