Turning focus to baseball
July 26, 2019
California coach Justin Wilcox said Thursday that McIlwain has left the football team and has chosen to focus solely on playing baseball during his redshirt junior season, Spencer Golanka of The Daily Californian reports.
ANALYSIS
The dual-sport athletic transferred to Cal from South Carolina in March 2017, sitting out that year before making his debut for the Golden Bears in 2018. McIlwain, who likely would have been limited in the Bears' fall camp while recovering from a broken foot he sustained in the spring during baseball season, wasn't expected to have a major role on the gridiron in 2019 after switching from quarterback to running back over the offseason. McIlwain started in two of his 10 games as a signal-caller last season, completing 80 of 129 passes for 763 yards, two touchdowns and eight interceptions while adding 403 yards an four scores on the ground. Given that McIlwain, a 26th-round draft pick of the Miami Marlins this summer, has a more promising professional future in baseball, it's unlikely he'll return to the football team for his final year of eligibility in 2020.
