Declares for 2017 NFL Draft
January 6, 2017
Hood announced Friday that he will enter the 2017 NFL Draft, Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
After initially announcing that he would return for his senior season, Hood opted to change his decision and enter the draft prior to the deadline. "This was a difficult decision, but after gathering more information and talking with my family, I believe it is in my best interest to declare for the NFL Draft," said Hood on Friday. As a running back, this is a prudent move for Hood given the average shelf life of NFL runners. He had a slight regression in production in 2016, rushing for 858 yards and eight touchdowns in 11 games after torching opposing defenses for 1,463 yards and 17 touchdowns as a sophomore. Hood (6-0, 220) has the frame of an NFL back and his strong per-carry production at the college level should translate into him becoming an effective runner at the next level. He figures to be a late selection on Day 2 or an early selection on Day 3 provided that he turns in a strong combine to go with his impressive game film.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2014
Hood was extremely impressive in 2015, and 2016 should be even better. A future NFL runner at 6-0, 220, Hood is built like a feature back but has the long speed to create big plays. Coach Larry Fedora had a maddening tendency to keep the ball away from Hood for long stretches last year, but Hood's 1,463 yards (6.7 YPC) and 17 TDs in 14 games hopefully let the coach see the error of his ways going into 2016. Even if Fedora hasn't learned anything, Hood should see more work just because running QB Marquise Williams graduated after 948 yards and 13 TDs last year.
The Tar Heels have one major talent at running back in sophomore T.J. Logan, and Romar Morris was very effective for them not long ago, but the depth is otherwise lacking in the North Carolina backfield. That's particularly true as far as the power element goes, because both Logan and Morris are small, speedy runners. Hood's arrival to North Carolina changed all that. He's one of the nation's elite running back recruits this year, and at 6-foot, 220 pounds he has the size to offer a bruising element that Logan and Morris can't. The presence of Logan and Morris probably means Hood will be just a part-time player in 2014, but he should eventually emerge as a workhorse. As a big back with good power and standout straight-line speed, he reminds a bit of a healthy Knile Davis.
