Headed to NFL
January 3, 2017
Malone will enter the 2017 NFL Draft, 247Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Malone, listed at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, might be a bit under the radar right now but will likely get labeled a 'riser' in the pre-draft process as people get around to examining his prospect profile. Malone was a high-ranking recruit for Tennessee who earned high praise as a practice standout even as a true freshman, though it wasn't until his 2016 junior year that he fully broke out in game settings. He finished the year with 50 catches for 972 yards and 11 touchdowns in 13 games, showing consistent downfield playmaking. He should test well at the Combine and in the process confirm his projection as a fine downfield target in the NFL. Malone told 247Sports that he's generally been told he'll be a mid-round pick, but we imagine he has a good shot of getting picked in the draft's second day.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2014
Malone finished his sophomore season near the top of the team in almost every major receiving category, catching 31 passes for 405 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Senior Von Pearson has exhausted his eligibility, leaving Malone as a potential No.1 receiver in the Vols’ offense this season. Unfortunately, Malone’s fantasy value is capped a bit by virtue of the offense due to its run-first mentality that doesn’t leave a ton of room for the downfield passing game. In fact, no Tennessee receiver has bested 650 yards in a given season since Justin Hunter blew up for 1,083 yards in 2012, and the Vols have had just one receiver catch five touchdowns in the last two years. Although we expect quarterback Joshua Dobbs to improve (to some extent) as a passer, Malone’s simply not a Hunter or Cordarrelle Patterson, so it’s difficult to imagine Malone bursting through the 650-yard, 5-touchdown threshold this season even if he’s the Vols’ top wideout.
There's a lot of excitement surrounding wideout Marquez North at Tennessee, and a fair amount of hype for Pig Howard and Jason Croom behind him, but it really looks like Malone might be the best of the bunch. He received a great deal of hype in the offseason, and it sounds like he might push North right away for the WR1 distinction with the Volunteers. Malone, who is apparently quite the acrobat, might be a Jordan Matthews-like talent for Tennessee. The problem for Malone's fantasy potential is that Tennessee doesn't seem to have a quarterback.
