Breaks FBS rushing record in bowl win
December 18, 2016
Pumphrey picked up 115 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries during San Diego State's 34-10 victory Saturday over Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl. He also added 26 yards on his lone reception.
ANALYSIS
Playing in his hometown of Las Vegas, Pumphrey had plenty of family and friends on hand to witness him make history in his final college game. Pumphrey's 15-yard gain on a sweep in the fourth quarter allowed him to establish a new FBS record with 6,405 career rushing yards, surpassing former Wisconsin legend Ron Dayne. While Pumphrey will now turn his attention to the NFL following a storied college career, the Aztecs should still be in good hands in the backfield. Junior Rashaad Penny was outstanding in a backup role behind Pumphrey this season, picking up 1,005 yards on the ground while averaging 7.4 yards per carry.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
2014
The active career rushing yardage and touchdowns leader in the FBS, Pumphrey (5-9, 180) has already enjoyed an incredibly successful career at San Diego State, boasting 4,272 yards (6.0 YPC) and 45 TDs on the ground in 40 games, adding 72 receptions for 808 yards and five TDs. He's taken on a gigantic workload for a back who's played most of his career below 180 pounds, but Pumphrey showed no signs of slowing in 2015, running for 1,653 yards (5.3 YPC) and 17 touchdowns in 14 games, adding 27 receptions for 414 yards and three touchdowns.
If not for a frightening lack of size at just 5-9, 170, Pumphrey would be a top-3 RB. Simply remarkable the last two years, Pumphrey posted 1,049 yards and 10 touchdowns from scrimmage as a 155-pound freshman in 2013 before going off for 1,873 yards (6.8 YPC) and 20 touchdowns on the ground alone last year. Pumphrey's size will scare off some fantasy owners, but he should keep rolling this season. All but one of his starting linemen return, and he is too good to be contained by Mountain West defenses.
Pumphrey is perilously small at a listed 5-9, 170 (155 in 2013), but the speedy RB was highly effective as a true freshman last year, showing elite upside as a running-receiving threat for the Aztecs. He rushed for 752 yards (6.0 YPC) and eight touchdowns while adding 22 catches for 234 yards (10.6 YPC) and two more scores. He did it all despite the presence of starting RB Adam Muema, who ate up 256 carries and 18 catches. Muema is no longer on the team, paving the way for Pumphrey. While Pumphrey probably isn't big enough for a feature-back workload, the rare upside he's shown gives reason to believe he'll post big numbers this year as long as he's healthy.
