Hackenberg announced Saturday that he will declare for the 2016 NFL Draft, Greg Pickel of PennLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Shortly after Saturday's loss to Georgia in the Tax Slayer Bowl, Hackenberg announced that he will forego his senior season and enter this spring's NFL Draft. Hackenberg is a mercurial prospect given his obvious physical tools, but his uneven play over the past two years will likely give some talent evaluators some pause after he struggled at times under offensive coordinator John Donovan. He played behind an overmatched offensive line the past two seasons that gave up 82 sacks in that span. Even considering the poor offensive line play, Hackenberg struggled to show consistent improvement under Donovan, which leaves some intrigue as to where he will land in the upcoming draft.

2013
Hackenberg didn’t live up to his billing in 2014 as he failed to improve upon a promising freshman campaign. He threw for 22 more yards last season than he did as a freshman, but took steps back in every other major statistical category. His touchdowns went down from 20 to 12, his interception total ballooned from 10 picks to 15, his completion rate fell from an already subpar 58.9 percent to 55.8 percent, and his YPA fell from 7.54 to 6.15. That said, there is some explanation for the regression as he had to play behind a sieve of an offensive line while learning a new offense. This year, Hackenberg is primed to live up to his first-round potential with an increased comfort level in the offense, four projected returning starters on the offensive line, and a pair of stud receivers in DaeSean Hamilton and Geno Lewis. While Penn State’s offense won’t be in the same stratosphere as some of the high-flying attacks elsewhere across the nation, Hackenberg’s ability, weapons, and improved supporting cast should equate to marked improvement over his 2014 season.
Hackenberg is one of the elite 2013 recruits and will get a chance to battle with Tyler Ferguson for the starting quarterback role at Penn State. The door opened for Hackenberg after last season's backup, Steven Bench, decided to transfer. Hackenberg is expected to split first-team reps this summer alongside Ferguson. If Hackenberg wins the competition, he'll have one of the nation's most promising wideout-tight end tandems to throw to in Allen Robinson and Kyle Carter.
