Likely out until ACC Tournament
Cone won't play for the remainder of the regular season, but coach Mike Young is optimistic he'll be available for the ACC Tournament that begins March 9, Norm Wood of The Virginian-Pilot reports.
ANALYSIS
Cone had been given a starting opportunity in early-February, but suffered an ankle injury Feb. 6 and hasn't seen game action since (the team also had a two-plus week pause due to COVID-19 protocol). Virginia Tech is 1-1 since returning from that hiatus and has a pair of regular season games against Louisville (March 3) and North Carolina State (March 6) remaining. Cone and the Hokies are presumed to be safely in the NCAA Tournament field, so there's little reason to rush back the sophomore early. The team also got a recent boost with the return of Tyrece Radford (11.4 ppg) from suspension, but Cone's 9.2 ppg scoring average will certainly be welcome in postseason play.
