DFS College Basketball: Monday Preview

DFS College Basketball: Monday Preview

This article is part of our DFS College Basketball series.

Monday's DFS contests feature an identical three-game slate of conference matchups, beginning with a game between Wisconsin and Maryland, two teams with below-average pace. Sticking in the Big Ten, the matchup between Minnesota and Michigan State is expected to be competitive with plenty of scoring, and there are several appealing top-tier and mid-tier players that should provide DFS value Monday. The final game of the night shifts to the Pac-12 in a game between two teams with vastly different tempos, but there could be some appealing DFS plays, especially if Arizona gets the chance to set the pace of the contest.

Targets

Marcus Carr, G, Minnesota ($9,500 DK, $8,700 FD)

Carr carries the highest salary by far on both platforms, but he's also been the most productive player by far for the Gophers heading into a matchup against Michigan State that carries the highest expected total of any game on the DFS slate Monday. The 6-foot-2 guard has reached the 30-point threshold in each of the last two matchups while playing at least 40 minutes in each game. His playing time was boosted Friday since the team's Christmas Day matchup against Iowa went into overtime, but he took a backseat to Brandon Johnson down the stretch and still had a strong DFS performance. Monday's game should be a competitive, high-scoring matchup, and Carr has proven to be a reliable fantasy option this season.

Joey Hauser, F, Michigan State ($7,500 DK, $7,200 FD)

Sticking with the top-tier players, Hauser should get the chance to thrive once again in Monday's high-tempo matchup. The transfer from Marquette was hampered by a knee injury earlier in the season, but he's now playing with a sleeve on his left knee that appears to help the issue. Hauser leads the Spartans in both points per game and rebounds per game, and he should play a prominent role once again in Monday's road matchup. The redshirt junior didn't appear to be limited by his knee against Wisconsin, and he should be a key contributor against Minnesota as the Spartans seek to earn their first conference win of the season.

Evan Battey, F, Colorado ($4,700 DK, $5,800 FD)

Monday's matchup between Colorado and Arizona is expected to be a fairly low-scoring one, but Battey has been quite consistent over the past several games. After a relatively lackluster start to the season, the junior has been a key contributor for the Buffaloes over the past four games. DFS players on FanDuel could be better off looking for mid-tier value elsewhere, but Battey's DraftKings salary makes him an intriguing option to provide at least 4x value against Arizona given his output over the past four games. The conference matchup against the Wildcats should be competitive, and the scoring total could slightly rise if Arizona gets the chance to dictate the tempo in the matchup, which should help Battey's DFS potential Monday.

Fades

Brandon Johnson, F, Minnesota ($6,000 DK, $6,200 FD)

Johnson is coming off a heroic performance Friday that led Minnesota to a win over Iowa, but his DFS salary has soared following the game in which he converted on eight of his nine shots from beyond the arc. While the transfer from Western Michigan likely earned the chance to secure an increased role for the Gophers going forward, he's been quite inconsistent early in the season, especially since he's started four of his first eight games with the program. The Hawkeyes gave him enough looks to attempt nine shots from the perimeter, but he hadn't attempted more than three shots from long range prior to Friday's matchup. Johnson's Christmas Day output is tempting for DFS players, but there are several more reliable options with similar salaries Monday.

Darryl Morsell, G, Maryland ($5,900 DK, $5,900 FD)

Morsell came off the bench for the first time this year during Friday's loss to Purdue, and he missed a pair of late free throws that would have tied the game. The senior was quite efficient over the first three games of the season, but he's shot just 27.3 percent from the field in the five contests since then. He was dealing with a shoulder injury earlier in December that could have contributed to some of his woes, but he's still struggled after the team's long layoff. Maryland will have to face the Badgers on Monday, who boast one of the best defenses in the nation, and neither team will be particularly motivated to drive the tempo. Coach Mark Turgeon hasn't indicated whether Morsell will return to the starting lineup, but he's been inefficient recently regardless of his role.

Azuolas Tubelis, F, Arizona ($7,100 DK, $5,900 FD)

Tubelis entered the starting five for the first time this season during the Wildcats' last game, and he had a strong performance against Montana, posting eight points and nine rebounds. He'll likely maintain his spot in the rotation over Christian Koloko, but Tubelis' salary on DraftKings is quite hefty given his limited sample in the lineup. The true freshman has been inconsistent to begin the season, and the Wildcats could be in for a low-scoring contest Monday since Colorado doesn't tend to drive the tempo. Tubelis' salary on FanDuel is slightly easier to accept, but he's a risky play on either platform given his limited sample and Monday's expected total.
