DFS College Basketball: Monday Preview

DFS College Basketball: Monday Preview

This article is part of our DFS College Basketball series.

While FanDuel looks ahead to Tuesday's stacked slate of games, DraftKings will keep things going with a four-game slate heavy on mid-major action. Let's jump right in, but first, our implied totals for the day, taken from our Daily Matchup Info page:

Targets

1. Tre King, F, Eastern Kentucky ($8,900 DK)

Although King carries the second-highest salary of anyone on Monday's slate, he's been dominant for the Colonels to begin the season. He's posted double-doubles in two of the first four games this year, and he'll be going up against a Morehead State squad that struggles on the defensive side of the ball. King picked up four fouls against USC Upstate on Wednesday, but he still led the team with 29 minutes on the floor, and he's averaging 32.3 minutes and 16.0 field-goal attempts per game to begin the season. The 6-foot-9 junior has only accumulated one assist over the first four games of the year, but he's been highly productive in several areas this season, and fantasy managers likely won't be disappointed despite his hefty salary.

2. Wendell Green Jr., F, Eastern Kentucky ($6,000 DK)

For those looking to get involved with the Colonels' offense at a mid-tier salary, Green has joined the starting lineup in each of the last two games, and his salary hasn't caught up quite yet. The freshman is averaging 5.8 assists per game over his first four collegiate contests, and he's also put up 10.5 points per game. He committed five turnovers in Wednesday's game against USC Upstate and only played 20 minutes, but he still hit double figures in the scoring column. He already ranks third on the team with 12.3 field-goal attempts per game, and he's been productive despite shooting just 26.5 percent from the floor this year. While Green is still experiencing some growing pains with ball control, he's been a key offensive piece over his first four games with the team.

3. Nygal Russell, G, SE Missouri State ($6,500 DK)

Sticking with the mid-tier salaries, Russell has seen a major uptick in usage over the first two games of his junior season, averaging 35.0 minutes per game. While Monday's matchup features two teams with lackluster pace, Russell's production on the boards boosts his DFS value. Even when he was held scoreless in Wednesday's contest, his rebounding helped provide a foundation for his fantasy production. As a 6-foot-4 guard, his frame doesn't profile as someone who would be very efficient on the boards, but he's had a major jump in the category early in the season after averaging just 2.8 rebounds per game over his first two seasons with the team. He's never been a prolific scorer, but his newfound success in rebounding makes him an intriguing mid-tier player.

Fades

1. Luke Avdalovic, F, Northern Arizona ($4,900 DK)

Northern Arizona is opening the season at Arizona for a second consecutive year, and nearly every offensive player fared poorly in last year's matchup. Avdalovic put together a nice season overall in the 2019-20 campaign, but he was held to just four points and two rebounds against the Wildcats last year. The Lumberjacks should be put to the test to begin the season against one of the best defensive teams in the country. Even though Arizona isn't returning any starters from last year, the team has several productive transfers, and the Wildcats have maintained their defensive tenacity over the first two games of the 2020-21 season. Cameron Shelton ($7,000 DK) is one of the only players from Northern Arizona that I would consider, but some more reliable players could also be found at his value.

2. James Akinjo, G, Arizona ($9,000 DK)

Akinjo has been the Wildcats' leading scorer over his first two games with the team, but his numbers in other categories haven't jumped off the page. The Georgetown transfer is averaging just 3.0 assists and 1.0 rebound per game to begin his time at Arizona. The Wildcats have the highest expected score on Monday's slate, but the team has spread out its production early in the season with its new-look starting five. Akinjo has been prolific from the perimeter, shooting 40.0 percent early in the season while averaging 8.0 three-point attempts over the first two contests.

3. Terrell Brown, G, Arizona ($7,900 DK)

Brown was a highly-productive player for Seattle, and he's immediately eligible to play for his new program as a graduate transfer. However, he's come off the bench in each of his first two games with the team and has mustered just 4.5 points per game early in the season. He's had ample playing time with 24.0 minutes per contest with the Wildcats, but his $7,900 salary on DraftKings isn't reflective of the player he's been for Arizona so far. While Brown could carve out more of a role later in the season, his output early in the season doesn't warrant his high DFS salary.
