After one collegiate season at Kentucky, Maxey was selected with the 21st pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-2 20-year-old posted season averages of 8.0 points, 2.0 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 0.4 steals. Maxey played in 61 games and started in eight while averaging 15.3 minutes. The rookie shot the ball impressively well as he made 46.2 percent from the field, 30.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc and 87.1 percent from the charity stripe. One of Maxey's best performances of the year came against the Nuggets on Jan. 9, as the guard dropped a season-high 39 points, to go along with seven rebounds, six assists and two steals in 44 minutes. In the playoffs, Maxey averaged 6.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.5 blocks in 12 games against the Wizards and Hawks. Defensively, the rookie showed a lot of potential, especially when he recorded a season-high three steals in 21 minutes against the Pistons on Jan. 25. Maxey also notched a season-high three blocks in 14 minutes on May 26 against the Wizards. On the offensive end, Maxey solidified himself as a player who can score from anywhere on the court, as he finished the season with 26 games scoring double-digit points. Overall, Maxey had an exceptional rookie season, as he finished third on his team in points off of the bench (8.0).
