2020 Fantasy Outlook
Birch completed his third campaign in Orlando last season and essentially filled the same role as in his first two years, albeit with a bump to 19.2 minutes per contest with the aid of a career-high 24 starts. The UNLV alum was a key fill-in when Nikola Vucevic missed 11 games with an ankle injury from late November to mid-December and finished with averages of 4.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.0 assist over 48 games. Birch is a solid rebounder who's best suited at power forward, as he's undersized for the five at 6-foot-9, but he won't offer much in the way of offensive contributions. With the Magic returning all five starters and valued veteran Al-Farouq Aminu scheduled to return to the frontcourt rotation from a knee injury that limited him to 18 games in his first season in Orlando, Birch's role figures to be modest once again unless multiple injuries strike the big men in front of him. Personal Bio

Khem Xavier Birch was born in 1992 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has four brothers. Birch attended three different high schools: St. Thomas Aquinas (Russell, Ontario), The Winchendon School (Winchendon, MA) and Notre Dame Prep (Fitchburg, MA). In 2010, Birch earned a bronze medal as part of Canada's Under-18 junior national team at the 2010 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. Birch was named a McDonald's All-American in 2011. During his NBA career with the Magic, Birch took youth from the Boys and Girls Club of Central Florida on a holiday shopping spree in 2018. In 2019, Birch assisted in assembling 12,500 food packs for Second Harvest Food Bank to feed underprivileged youth. To learn more, follow Birch on Twitter (@Khem_Birch) and Instagram (@khembirch).

College/International Summary

Birch played for Pittsburgh in his freshman year (2011-12) before transferring to UNLV for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. The Montreal, Quebec native led the Mountain West Conference in both total blocks (124) and blocks per game (3.8) in the 2013-14 season. He was also third in the MWC in total defensive rebounds (206) in that year. The center was a key focal point for the Runnin' Rebels, finishing second on the team in scoring (11.5 PPG) and rebounding (10.2 RPG) in his junior season. With one year of eligibility remaining, Birch declared for the 2014 NBA Draft. He was not selected, but Birch signed with the Washington Wizards before the 2014 NBA Summer League.

Gets 18 minutes in team debut
CToronto Raptors
April 12, 2021
Birch played 18 minutes Sunday in the Raptors' 102-96 loss to the Knicks, compiling four points (2-4 FG, 0-2 FT) and five boards.
ANALYSIS
Making his Toronto debut, Birch's playing time was consistent with what he received over his 48 appearances with Orlando earlier this season (19.8 minutes per game). He may have the chance to see a slight uptick in minutes or even start at center once he gets more integrated with the team, but the biggest fantasy implications in play here concern Chris Boucher, who could lose some value due to Birch's arrival. Birch already looks to have supplanted Aron Baynes in the rotation, as the latter didn't play in Sunday's loss in a coach's decision.

2019

Playing in his third NBA season, Birch appeared in 48 games for the Magic in 2019-20. In a career-high 19.2 minutes per game, Birch posted career-bests in rebounds (4.6) and assists (1.0) per contest. He also added 4.4 points per game on 51.0 percent shooting. From Nov. 20 to Dec. 13, Birch appeared in 12 straight games, making 11 starts, and posting 5.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 28 minutes per contest. On Nov. 29, Birch grabbed a career-high-tying 12 rebounds -- to go with a season-high three blocks -- in a home loss to the Raptors. He followed up with seven points, 10 rebounds, and three assists in a win over Golden State on Dec. 1. In a Jan. 8 win over Washington, Birch had 11 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and a season-high three steals. During the Magic's eight seeding games in the Orlando bubble, Birch averaged 7.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 18.0 minutes. He appeared in all five of the team's first-round playoff games against Milwaukee. In Game 3, Birch finished with six points, seven rebounds, four assists, and one steal.

2018

Birch's second NBA season saw an increase in playing time as he appeared in 50 games, making his first career start against the Charlotte Hornets on April 10. The 26 year-old averaged 4.8 points and 3.8 rebounds on the season. He appeared in the playoffs for the first time, playing in all five of his team's games. Had his best playoff performance in game five, when he scored nine points, grabbed 11 rebounds, recorded three assists and four blocks. Overall he averaged 5.2 points, 6.2 boards and one block per game in the playoffs. Recorded a double-double on March 14 against Cleveland with 13 points and 11 rebounds in a 120-91 win. He scored 10 points and added five rebounds in a win against Philadelphia on March 25. Birch also made a season-high six free throws against the 76ers, while matching a career-high 10 free throw attempts. He recorded four blocks in a game on two occasions, in a 105-103 win against Boston on January 12 and a 103-83 win against Milwaukee on February 9. He scored eight points and grabbed six boards in 22 minutes against Dallas on December 10.

2017

Following two years overseas, Birch made his NBA debut in the 2017-2018 season. The Canadian carved out a steady role in Orlando, appearing in 42 games and averaging 13.8 minutes per contest as a reserve. Birch quickly established himself as a reliable rebounder, as he averaged 11.2 boards per 36 minutes. Offensively, the 25-year-old worked inside the paint to the tune of 4.2 points per game on an efficient 54 percent from the field. He also shot 68.9 percent from the free-throw line. Birch was a true post player, as he did not attempt a single 3-pointer all season. Defensively, Birch used his length to register 1.3 blocks per 36 minutes. He blocked a season-high four shots in a win over Minnesota on Jan. 16. Birch blocked at least two shots in a game on five other occasions. His season high for points was 13 in a win over Washington on April 11. Birch grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds in a loss to Toronto on April 8. That game was also one of three double-doubles for the rookie.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
After going undrafted in 2014, Birch spent a year in the G-League before moving overseas for two seasons. Last year, however, he was given another opportunity to play in the NBA. Birch played 42 games for the Magic, averaging 4.2 points and 4.3 rebounds across 13.8 minutes. The UNLV product was also able to rack up three double-doubles and 12 contests with at least one block. With the addition of Mohamed Bamba with the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft, minutes will be harder to come by for Birch, and it seems likely he'll spend significant time on the pine and/or in the G-League.
