2024 Fantasy Outlook
Springs was off to a fantastic start in 2023 with 24 strikeouts in 16 innings and one earned run off a solo homer until a precautionary removal of him from a start against Boston led to worse news that he had indeed torn his UCL. He had surgery on April 23rd, which all but rules him out of the first half of the 2024 season. Given the Rays conservative approach with pitchers coming back from injuries like this, take the under on whatever projection the marketplace is putting on his workload. Remember that the last thing that comes back for these pitchers is their command and feel for the baseball, two things that are critical to Springs's success given his lack of pure velocity and his dependency of his changeup. Keeper league managers can try to score a late bargain with him while reset league managers are wasting a draft pick because there are no guarantees Springs pitches effectively once he returns. Elbow
March 20, 2024
Springs (elbow) has thrown off a mound twice in the last week, Marc Topkin of Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Springs underwent Tommy John surgery April 24, 2023, and his recent throwing sessions mark the first occasions he's thrown off a mound since getting the elbow procedure. It's a positive step, but he's still not expected to return from the 60-day injured list until sometime in July or August.

Returning after All-Star break
PTampa Bay Rays
July 18, 2022
Springs is expected to make a start in Kansas City after the All-Star break, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
ANALYSIS
Springs is eligible to return from the injured list July 22 after suffering a lower right leg injury earlier in the month. Tampa Bay begins a three-game series in Kansas City on Friday and Rays manager Kevin Cash says he expects Springs to pitch one of those games. The lefty has been excellent since moving to the rotation in May and has solidified his role as one of Tampa's top starters going into the second half. His 64 innings this season are already a career high and he has thrown over 100 innings just once in his professional baseball career, in 2017 at Single-A. It wouldn't be surprising if the Rays occasionally give him extra rest down the stretch.

2022
2021
Springs began the season in a multi-inning reliever capacity before being used as an opener and then primary pitcher before transitioning into a traditional starter. He started 22 games as the latter, posting a 2.61 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 113.2 innings with a 26.4% strikeout rate and 6.0% walk rate. His 20.4% would have ranked 11th among qualified starters but Springs didn't collect ample innings. Throwing at least 162 frames this season is plausible as Springs averaged a tick over five innings per game once he became a full-fledged starter. Springs throws a 92-mph four-seamer, a slider, and an 81-mph changeup. Buoyed by a delta over 10-mph from the fastball, the changeup is Springs best pitch as it generated swinging strikes at a 22.6% clip. An 82.3% LOB mark suppressed Springs ERA about half a run, but his success was mostly earned and should be repeatable for a Rays club adept at managing pitching.
Springs was DFA'd by the Red Sox last February after a poor 2020, but the Rays were quick to swoop in and trade for the left-handed reliever. With Tampa Bay dealing with several injuries in their pen, he appeared early and often and quickly earned the trust of Kevin Cash after performing well in high-leverage. Springs was often tagged for home runs (1.8 HR/9), but improved the quality of his fastball (.397 SLG versus .632 in 2020) while also adding velocity (+1.3-mph on average). His changeup was his best pitch, producing a .220 SLG and 48.2% whiff percentage. The 29-year-old owns reverse splits for his career with an .873 OPS against left-handed hitters compared to .783 versus right-handed bats. Springs went 5-1 with two saves, 10 holds and a 3.43 ERA in 44.2 innings before suffering a season-ending ACL injury last July. There is no word yet on his status for the start of spring training.
In many ways, Springs is an enigma. His go-to pitch is a sinking fastball, but he mostly throws it up in the zone. It averages about 92 mph, but he generates plenty of whiffs with it, and combined with a plus changeup he posted a career-high 16.9% swinging strike rate last year. The one area where everything goes according to script, unfortunately, is in homers, and when he misses his spot the ball tends to travel a long way. The sum of those parts for the left-hander is a pitcher who best fits in a low-leverage role, absorbing innings in situations where his mistakes aren't too costly. Springs still has a spot on the 40-man roster, so the Red Sox seem willing to give him another chance to emerge as something more.
