Samad Taylor

25-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
Seattle Mariners
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Taylor began the season with Triple-A Omaha before earning his first trip to The Show in mid-June. He shuttled back and forth a few times but never was able to show he could handle major league pitching. Taylor contributed eight steals without being caught in just 31 games with the Royals, but his 31.9 percent strikeout rate and 30.0 percent HardHit% resulted in a low .270 on-base mark. However, on the farm, Taylor's combined line was .299/.416/.464 with a 20.5 percent strikeout rate and 15.9 percent walk rate. The 25-year-old's primary position is second base, but he can play third base, shortstop and left field, so he could earn a job as a utility infielder with a strong spring. Taylor isn't worthy of anything more than a reserve spot in an AL-only format, but he could emerge as a cheap source of steals in season if he can better approach the plate skills displayed on the farm. * Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Taylor was acquired by the Royals from the Blue Jays in the Whit Merrifield trade, and the prospect was added to the 40-man roster in November in order to protect him from selection during the Rule 5 draft. The 24-year-old had a solid-but-unremarkable .258/.337/.426 slash line with nine home runs and 23 stolen bases in 81 games at the Triple-A level last season, and his work on the basepaths is likely his only noteworthy fantasy upside. Kansas City's potential lineup is filled with middling prospects and Quadruple-A players, so Taylor would be hard pressed to find a better situation for immediate playing time. He may not make the Opening Day roster given he has yet to make his MLB debut, but it shouldn't be too long before he makes his way to the majors, especially if he has a strong showing during spring training.
