2024 Fantasy Outlook
The catching position is not an everyday job. Even for the best of catchers in baseball that do not play in Kansas City, the position is a 4-5 starts a week role while the backup gets Sunday day games and mid-week getaway games behind the plate. Serven fills the latter role for the Rockies behind Elias Diaz and there is no danger in those two roles changing any time soon. Sure, they did in June of 2022 while Serven caught lightning in a bottle, but the backup catcher has hit .145/.194/.234 since July first of last year while the club extended Diaz to a new contract after being reminded what their fallback option was, or was not. Serven can throw with the best of them, but he has no fantasy viability in any league format unless something were to happen to Diaz and playing time was forced onto him. Read Past Outlooks

Optioned to Triple-A
CToronto Blue Jays  AAA
April 15, 2024
Serven was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo by the Blue Jays on Monday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Serven was the Jays' backup catcher while Danny Jansen (wrist) was on the shelf, but he's no longer needed with Jansen back in the fold. He's hitless in 10 plate appearances this season.

Stat Review
How does Brian Serven compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Serven received his first big-league promotion in mid-May last season shortly after turning 27. He belted two homers in his second major-league game and wound up with three long balls and an .859 OPS through the end of June as he stole away significant playing time from Elias Diaz. Serven then came crashing back to earth with a .450 OPS across his final 41 games. The Rockies failed to upgrade at catcher over the offseason, so Serven is in line to serve as Diaz's understudy again. He could work his way into a 1A and 1B situation, which might be enough for deep league attention at least for games at Coors Field.
