2020 Fantasy Outlook
Hirano entered the season as a potential closing candidate in Arizona after finishing 2018 with a strong 2.44 ERA. He wasn't able to live up to the hype in his second season stateside, however, finishing with just one save and a 4.75 ERA in 53 innings of work. He also missed some time with elbow inflammation, though he returned for seven appearances in September, so that likely won't be a worry heading into this year. Despite the downturn in his ERA, 2019 wasn't a completely negative season for Hirano, as his strikeout rate did increase from 22.5% to 26.2%. He lost some of his ability to keep the ball on the ground, though, with his groundball rate falling from 50.3% to 44.4%. Hirano still appears to be good enough to hold down a bullpen spot, but he's not a particularly strong candidate for high-leverage work and is unlikely to add many saves to his total this season. Participates in Peoria workout
PSeattle Mariners
May 26, 2020
Hirano was present for the re-start of workouts at the Mariners' spring facility in Peoria, Arizona on Tuesday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 36-year-old right-hander joined several of his teammates for informal workouts that were conducted in groups no larger than three. Hirano was able to engage in his throwing program under staff supervision, and he and his fellow hurlers should soon have access to bullpen mounds at the facility. The veteran only got five innings of Cactus League work in before spring training was suspended, but he put together impressive performances in both Japan and his 2018 MLB debut campaign with the Diamondbacks before scuffling some last season on the way to a 4.75 ERA and 1.38 WHIP.

Stat Review
How does Yoshihisa Hirano compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike
The percentage of pitches that result in a swing and a miss.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
Arizona brought Hirano over from Japan before the 2018 season, and he impressed in his first big-league campaign. The sparkling ERA may oversell his performance a little bit, as "Yoshi San" punched out just 8.0 batters per nine. He relied more so on the groundball -- his splitter helped him force a 50.3% groundball rate. Hirano tunnels it well with his four-seamer from a three-quarters delivery to bolster the deception, hence his 12.2% swinging-strike rate last year. Given this effective (if atypical for a back-end arm) approach, the 35-year-old will likely at least hover around the Diamondbacks' saves picture for much of the season. However, Archie Bradley seems to have the inside track to that job, so Hirano will likely begin the season in a setup capacity. Include him on the list of closers in waiting, should Bradley get hurt, traded or struggle in the ninth.
Hirano signed a two-year deal with Arizona after serving as the closer for the Orix Buffaloes in Japan the last five seasons. Hirano isn't overpowering (mid-to-low 90s fastball) but has good control and generates groundballs. Last year he had a 2.98 ERA with a 7.4 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 and 29 saves. However, he's 34 years old and has seen his strikeout rate decline each of the last three seasons. He'll likely work as a setup man but could challenge for the closer role.

Set for high-leverage work

February 27, 2020
Hirano has been identified by manager Scott Servais as someone who will get the ball at the end of games and in late-inning, high-leverage situations to start the year, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. "We don't want to take opportunities away from our young players but understanding the games we have leads, early in the season let's give it to the veteran guy, let's try to hang on and win those games. I think Hirano is an important pickup for us," Servais said.
