2021 Fantasy Outlook
Castro put 38 balls in play in 54 PA for the Tigers in 2020 and managed a single barrel by Statcast's definition. Regardless, Castro hit .347. He reached that mark on the strength of a 20.4 K%, and it was buoyed by a .447 BABIP. The fact that the Tigers have not given Castro a long look tells us all we really need to know; they view him as a utility piece and have not felt the need to give him more at-bats even while in full-blown evaluation mode. Castro spent some time on the injured list last season with a hamstring issue and is now 27 years old with a .318 OBP and .387 SLG in 125 games in the major leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Competing for bench role
Castro will compete with the likes of Akil Baddoo and potentially Isaac Paredes for a roster spot out of spring training, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Castro's role depends on how new manager A.J. Hinch decides to construct the roster. If Baddoo makes the team as a fifth outfielder, Castro could get squeezed. Paredes is also an option to play third base if Jeimer Candelario shifts over to first, which would further cloud the picture for Castro. The 27-year-old did impress with a .347/.407/.429 line in 22 games last season, so that should help his cause, and he has the versatility to play multiple positions in the infield and outfield.

2020 Fantasy Outlook
Castro received his first extended look in the big leagues last season and placed second on Detroit with a .291 average in 354 at-bats. That number should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as his paltry 79 wRC+ and .283 xwOBA form a more accurate view of his ability at the plate. Castro registered an absurd .367 BABIP that is almost certainly unsustainable given his 39.6% hard-hit rate and 86.3 mph average exit velocity. In addition, he was among the worst players in the league at drawing a walk as his 2.4 BB% ranked dead last among hitters with 200 or more plate appearances. For a player with almost no power, Castro also strikes out too often, logging a 23.3 K% last season. Castro played seven different defensive positions in 2019, giving him added real-life value, but his lack of any above-average offensive skill should keep him firmly entrenched on the waiver wire in fantasy leagues next season.
