Tuesday could be an evening filled with offensive explosions across baseball based on some of the pitchers scheduled to take the mound. Let's try to cash in on the favorable matchups with a winning entry on Yahoo.
Pitching Overview
Among the pitchers worth considering is Clayton Kershaw ($52) for his bout with the Cardinals. He's put together yet another excellent season, posting a 2.85 ERA and a 3.50 FIP. His line drive rate sits at just 18.3 percent, which would be his lowest mark since the 2011 season. Although the Cardinals have some dangerous hitters, they've only averaged three runs across their last 10 games.
As far as cheaper options go, there are a couple that are intriguing. One of them is Anibal Sanchez ($39), who continues to be a productive member of the Nationals' rotation. He's been especially hot of late, posting a 2.94 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP over his last 11 starts. Working in his favor for this outing is that he's facing a Giants team that is in the bottom-five of baseball in most major offensive categories. It also helps that the game will be played at pitcher-friendly Oracle Park.
Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, Dinelson Lamet ($34) has yet to log more than five innings in any of his five starts. He hasn't been overly effective, allowing 15 runs (13 earned) across 23 innings. If there is a stat that is encouraging, it's that he's recorded 30 strikeouts. That makes him someone to at least consider in tournament play against the Mariners, who have struck out the most times in baseball.
Key Values/Chalk
The White Sox and Tigers will play a doubleheader with the Tigers sending Drew VerHagen to the mound for the nightcap. He's been awful since being reinserted into the rotation, allowing 11 runs (nine earned) over 8.2 innings. Not only are Jose Abreu ($13) and Tim Anderson ($13) worth considering, but so is Leury Garcia ($13), who is 14-for-47 (.298) with two home runs over his last 10 games.
With their mostly likely path to a playoff spot now being via the Wild Card, the Red Sox need to take advantage of this series against the inferior Royals. They'll look to produce offensively against Jakob Junis, who they hammered for six runs (five earned) over 4.2 innings earlier this season. Rafael Devers ($23) stands out someone who will likely be included in a lot of entries since he has a 158 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers.
If there is one thing that you can count on with the Mariners, it's that they are going to be involved in the trade market. This year's deadline was no different, although they didn't move veteran Wade LeBlanc, who is expected to start Tuesday against the Padres. He likely didn't have many suitors based on his 5.36 FIP and 1.41 WHIP. He's also allowed 2.0 HR/9, which could end up being his downfall against the powerful right-handed duo of Manny Machado ($18) and Fernando Tatis Jr. ($21).
Stacks
Indians vs. Ariel Jurado (Rangers)
Francisco Lindor (SS - $20), Carlos Santana (1B - $17), Jason Kipnis (2B - $14)
Jurado has been one of the weak spots of the Rangers' staff, posting a 6.70 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP over his last nine appearances. He only has a 16.9 percent strikeout rate and has allowed a 44.2 percent hard-hit rate, both of which are not encouraging for his prognosis moving forward. Lindor carries tremendous upside into this matchup with him hitting 40-for-119 (.336) with eight home runs and eight doubles over his last 27 games. Santana also makes for a great option with his .388 wOBA versus right-handed pitchers.
Reds vs. Jose Suarez (Angels)
Eugenio Suarez (3B - $23), Nick Senzel (OF - $14), Aristides Aquino (OF- $10)
With the Angels' pitching staff in shambles, the Reds check in as one of the more appealing stacks to consider. The Angels don't have much choice now but to start Suarez, who has a 6.12 FIP and has allowed 11 home runs over just 41.1 innings. Suarez brings the power to this trio while Senzel has a stellar .392 wOBA against left-handed pitchers. Aquino is an intriguing young hitter who had a 142 wRC+ at Triple-A and could also cash in with a lefty on the mound.
Royals vs. Andrew Cashner (Red Sox)
Whit Merrifield (2B - $20), Hunter Dozier (3B - $20), Jorge Soler (OF - $24)
Cashner's tenure with the Red Sox has been disastrous so far with him allowing 20 runs (19 earned) over 23.1 innings. He's had control problems, issuing 10 walks compared to just 16 strikeouts during that stretch. The Royals might not have the most potent lineup, in general, but this is a matchup to exploit. Dozier stands out as one of the top players on the team to consider since he actually has a higher wOBA against right-handed pitchers (.379) than he does lefties (.347) this season.
