FanDuel MLB: Sunday Breakdown

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Breakdown

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Sunday's MLB Main slate begins at 1:07 PM Eastern time and features 11 games. Below, you'll find which individual pitchers and hitters are primed to provide the best value, as well as the top lineup stacking options in this slate.

Pitching Overview

There's a healthy mix of effective and hittable pitchers in action here. While there are a few solid choices on the mound, the high-profile matchup of James Paxton ($8,700) and Charlie Morton ($10,200) is best avoided in what could turn into a high-scoring affair in Tampa.

Sticking in the AL East, Boston's David Price ($9,100) should have no problem dominating the 29th-ranked Tigers' offense. Detroit is one of two teams averaging fewer than 4.0 runs per game, and come in well below that mark at 3.6. Meanwhile, Price's 28.0 percent strikeout rate ranks as the best of his career and his 2.90 FIP suggests his 3.33 ERA is actually a tad inflated.

Dallas Keuchel ($7,300) of the Braves will have a similarly favorable matchup here against Miami - the one offense ranked below Detroit's. The veteran southpaw has improved with each start since finally signing with a team, holding the Phillies to two runs in seven innings last time out. While his strikeout upside is limited, Keuchel brings a high floor to his fourth start given the feeble opposition.

Philadelphia's Aaron Nola ($9,700) had taken a step back this season after a brilliant 2018 campaign, but he's recently found his mojo. After posting a 28:5 K:BB in 23 innings of one-run ball over his past three starts, Nola will look to keep rolling against the Mets.

Value Plays/Chalk

Astros second baseman Jose Altuve ($3,600) remains a major threat against lefties, with a wOBA over .450 in that split. He should continue to find success against Angels southpaw Jose Suarez, who is giving up a .390 wOBA to batters from the right side.

Nationals shortstop Trea Turner ($4,200) should wreak havoc on Royals starter Jakob Junis out of the leadoff spot. Junis has struggled with a 5.53 ERA, and his 4.98 FIP is only marginally better.

If the Angels are going to keep things close against Houston, they'll need a strong performance from superstar outfielder Mike Trout ($4,800) against Astros starter Jose Urquidy - who lasted only 3.2 innings in his major-league debut Tuesday. Trout's wOBA in righty-on-righty matchups sits at over .450, so he should be well worth paying up for.

Stacks

Cubs vs. Ivan Nova (White Sox)

Anthony Rizzo (1B - $4,300), Robel Garcia (3B - $2,000), David Bote (2B - $2,700)

Nova has been terrible at Guaranteed Rate Field, posting an 8.31 ERA in 34.2 home innings. Things are unlikely to get any better against a Cubs' lineup teeming with dangerous hitters. Rizzo's wOBA against righties is just under .400. The switch-hitting Garcia represents a major power threat by posting a .590 slugging percentage in Double-A and a .596 mark in Triple-A before getting called up, then contributed a home run and a triple in his first major-league start Thursday. Bote has excelled in righty-on-righty matchups on the road this season, posting a wOBA over .400 in that split.

Blue Jays vs. Gabriel Ynoa (Orioles)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (3B - $3,200), Eric Sogard (2B - $3,400), Cavan Biggio (2B - $3,800)

The Blue Jays are rarely an offense to target, but even they should find plenty of success against Ynoa and his 6.22 ERA and 6.07 FIP through 16 appearances - seven of them starts. Righty-on-righty matchups have been particularly problematic for Ynoa, as he's surrendering a .404 wOBA in that situation. Guerrero should add to those struggles if an illness doesn't keep him out, as the league's most hyped rookie has been better against righties than lefties so far. Sogard owns the traditional platoon advantage as a left-handed batter, sporting a wOBA over .350 against pitchers from both sides while leading off against righties. Biggio is another effective batter from the left side, with a .374 wOBA against righties. Outfielder Lourdes Gurriel ($3,800) would also be an enticing option here if a wrist injury doesn't prevent him from playing.

Braves vs. Trevor Richards (Marlins)

Freddie Freeman (1B - $4,500), Nick Markakis (OF - $2,900), Brian McCann (C - $2,700)

Richards has struggled lately, surrendering 15 earned runs on 28 hits in 20.2 innings over his past four starts. This trio of left-handed sluggers is likely to keep piling onto Richards' recent struggles. Freeman has pummeled right-handed pitching as usual, posting a wOBA over .400 in that split. Markakis has a .359 wOBA against righties, and McCann registers just below at .349 while also coming cheap.
