Heeney was replaced by medical substitute James Bell in the second quarter of Thursday's match up between Sydney and Essendon after breaking his right hand, AFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The injury comes following a troublesome 2020 season in which the 24 year-old forward appeared in just six games after seriously injuring his ankle. No official word yet on how long Heeney may remained sideline, though FoxSports.com speculates it could be upwards of a month. Prior to his departure from Thursday night's contest, Heeney had collected nine disposals (seven kicks, two handballs), six marks, two behinds and a goal assist.

Heeney is expected to take over as the main forward for Sydney with Lance Franklin (hamstring) slated for an extended absence, Nic Negrepontis of SEN 1116 reports.
